‘Noisy neighbour’ air-conditioning system irritates Glebe residents
Those living within earshot of The Clemow describe a sound similar to a series of drones hovering over their homes.

Around a certain stretch of Bronson Avenue, there is a high-pitched noise in the air. John Crump describes it as a “high-pitched whine and roar.”

“Eventually, it’ll make you a bit crazy having to listen to this stuff all the time,” he said when he went to the nearby street to have another listen. The sound stretches out to nearby houses, including some located on Glebe, Clemow and Powell avenue.

The culprit is a new, neighbouring 17-storey apartment building, The Clemow, at Bronson and Carling Avenue. Promising luxury hotel living to adults aged 55 and over, it opened in fall 2024.

This is the first summer with the building’s air-conditioning on full blast.

Crump, president of the Glebe Community Association, says noise from the air-conditioning system has caused issues for area residents all summer. Around the neighbourhood, multiple large signs call The Clemow a “noisy neighbour.”

Crump has heard plenty of complaints from neighbours about a lack of sleep and increased stress. Excessive noise and noise pollution has also been raised as a health risk as it’s been linked to negative impacts on human health, according to the Ontario government.

“There’s a real threat to the quality of life and the right of people to enjoy a peaceful environment around their homes,” Crump said. “It’s incumbent on the company to try to find a solution as quickly as possible.”
