CZ is planning to retire their 788 fleet AFAIK, but its great news that they are putting their highest capacity aircraft (361 seats!) on CAN-YVR.

All kidding aside this seems like the beginning of fixing the last of the covid damage. If the Chinese airlines return then YVR is finally back to where it was pre-covid from a long haul destination and seats per week basis. Despite YVR breaking its previous high PAX figures so far this year, the airport is still about 12% below its previous seats per week from summer 2019. Shows how full the flights are now, or how weak loads were before.

I didn’t say that aeroroutes isn’t amazing because without them we wouldn’t have all this insider info. I’m just saying I would have thought there would be bigger coverage due to the current number of flights allowed in an out of Canada from china bc they must have been lifted.

So with the latest announcements mainland China flights from Vancouver increases to 23 per week - 12 on Chinese carriers and 11 on AC

Hainan 1pw SZX

Friend texted me from YVR tonight while waiting for a flight. AC showing Singapore, Sydney and Manila all cancelled tonight. I guess they didn’t want the aircraft being stuck there and having to be ferried back empty.

It's a pretty challenging logistical puzzle to wind down operations while minimizing costs, which tries to optimize for things like avoiding deadheads when service resumes, trying to take advantage of downtime to perform required maintenance, trying to minimize storage (i.e., parking) fees, getting the crews back to their home bases, etc. etc. etc. Not to mention the costs of reimbursing passengers for service not delivered.

When will YVR get Rome FCO? Next May Delta is starting regular service SEA-TAC to Rome and Barcelona. This breakthrough to the Mediterranean side of Europe is a first. Will YVR ever get over its obsession with SE Asia? It's great to have, but one might think it's YVR's top, if not only, priority.

Does anyone know where AC is storing their planes? I was out at Macarthur Glen today and expect to see a lot of parked a/c around their hangar but only three?

I'm guessing once AC takes delivery of their A321XLR's and 787-10's is when we might see some expansion out of YVR. Hoping to see the resumption of some destinations like MEL or TPE and introduce some new destinations in S.E Asia, Oceania, South America, and Europe.

Most of the planes are parked around the AC domestic gates and along runway 13/31. A handful are parked around the east pad and transborder gates.

With Alaska taking over Hawaiian airlines, they now have widebody aircraft and are starting to build out the Seattle international hub. That is going to be the largest factor than anything else.

So SEA will have both a Skyteam and Oneworld hub in Seattle with a strong domestic operator. That leaves Star Alliance as the weaker alliance in Seattle.

A rather quick update to China Southern’s recent announcement

China Southern this week filed changes to its planned operational aircraft when it resumes Guangzhou – Vancouver passenger service on 16SEP25. Initially scheduled twice weekly with 777-300ER, service between 16SEP25 and 14OCT25 will now be operated by 787-9.

Meanwhile, one of the two daily CX 77Ws to HKG this winter will feature their new Aria Suite. One of only a handful of routes to see this new suite.

Cathay Pacific in recent schedule update filed planned 361-seater 777-300ER operations for Northern winter 2025/26 season. As of 17AUG25, the new 3-class aircraft featuring Aria Suite is scheduled to service following routes between 26OCT25 and 28MAR26.
