Mowing done for another week. It's a beautiful day - only around 15C.

Was 20C (humidex of 22) this afternoon. It did rain until about 1PM after which it cleared quickly.
Officially the high was at 8AM before the rain at 22C (humidex of 27).

Low was actually achieved at 1PM with 15C.

The warmspot was Moose Jaw, SK at 31.0C

Warmest low was Toronto (City Centre), ON at 21.5C

10C in Moncton at 8 AM, going up to 20C this afternoon. It feels fallish.

We actually had a decent amount of rain yesterday evening. It lasted about six hours. We of course still have a tremendous rainfall deficit, and, the rain is coming late in the season, so I don't know how much of a difference this will make for farmers, but, I swear my lawn has perked up a bit already.

The long range shows a return to dry conditions. Wall to wall sunshine for the upcoming week, but temperatures are only in the low 20s.

Hurricane Erin will be a nothingburger for us, but, will retain hurricane status in Canadian waters, which is now becoming a fairly common occurrence. In the past, they almost always arrived as tropical storms or tropical depressions.

Low of 10C this morning. Officially down to 9.2C i n between hours. First July/August single digits low since 2020. But first time since 2013 that it happens BEFORE August 20th. Like I said about 3 weeks ago, the heat has been great this summer but the cool downs in between have been unusually severe.

The warmspot was Medicine Hat, AB at 31.9C

Warmest lows were Port Weller, ON and Emerson, MB at 17.4C

11C and (surprise) sunny in Moncton at 8 AM, going up to 22C this afternoon.

In the far northwest Appalachian part of NB (Edmundston), the overnight low was +0.2C.

Yesterday felt like fall with gusty north winds and much cooler. High of only 24.1. The low this morning was 19.0.

Finally. I’m up north for 9 days and there will be no beach today or anything really, but still happy to finally get a day with hours of rain. Don’t know if that will lift the fire ban though.

This mechanic shop had the downspout removed and now the water is just pooling there.

A very insectuous post...

I think I saw a cicada last summer or the one before floating in Georgian Bay. That's the only one ever I recall seeing up close until this summer. This is the third one. First two on the same day one hour and only a few kms apart. This time also close to home, but on my aunt's car.




Arrived up north to find my FIL's car covered in wasps and flies. He said he washed his car a couple of weeks ago but there's sap or something attracting these things. There were also lots around the hummingbird feeder. We didn't have spray so I ended up whacking at least 40 of them.

Also, there were a couple of monarchs flying around at the beach. Then we noticed one on the sand with wet wings and it couldn't fly away. I took it back to our spot to nurse it to health (let its wings dry). It stayed with us for 15 minutes before it flew away. We were walking around with it perched on our fingers, or stuck to our shirts or sitting on our head. My daughter also had a moth land on her hand a month ago and it didn't leave her finger for like half an hour.

Went to a different beach a few kms up the road and it was the same thing in late summer like last year. A beef broth of a shoreline. And even lower water than last year. At least finding the butterfly above made the visit worthwhile.

Also, the rock circles must be bass nests. The sandy part in the middle is actually several inches deep. Weird to walk on them and your foot unexpectedly drops down. There were 16 of them in one small area. Never seen more than a couple close together. Must have been wild during the bass spawn. A bass angler's wet dream. Well, except that it's illegal to fish for them during their spawn.

22C (humidex of 23) and sunny. Good thing for the sun because those aren't really summer like temperatures.

This is the best time of year to see insects

The green one in your photos is a katydid, one of my favourites. There are several types in Ontario, all look completely different. A few I've spotted:

Black legged meadow katydid


Greater angle-wing katydid


Fork tailed bush katydid from a few days ago





I'm surprised you haven't seen many cicadas before. Our trees are full of them, and we find their skins all over and even some dead ones

When they emerge from the ground, they molt and leave these skeletons


This may be two different species, the smaller one could be a swamp cicada and the bigger one is probably the most common type, the dog day cicada


Here's a cicada killer, a giant bee that stings the cicada, carries it down from the tree, lays eggs in the body and buries it. This was in my backyard a few years ago

Only bugs we are dealing with here this summer are mosquitos. Very wet July has been an absolute boon for them. I bought a thermacell and it works quite well, though it did feel like there was a film on my beer glass after about 20 minutes, so I'm going to keep it as far from me as possible. Last summer was wasps, was a hot dry summer and that's perfect for jerkflies lol.

24C with a humidex of 27 and mainly sunny. Not bad but could be warmer obviously. Pretty close to average (if not a tad cooler).
