So the towers will be at least 600' tall and the span will be at least 1,600' long.

#2 cable-stayed bridge in NA is very much within easy reach here, if they want it.

There was no way they were going to undersize this bridge all things being considered, especially now that the Bay Bridge is being replaced in tandem. MD essentially removing all ship limitations ”overnight” into the port and I’m all for it.

It’s in NEPA Tier two now. So it’s not a matter of “if” the bridges will replaced, more so “how/when”.

Main considerations is build both new bridges simultaneously and demo the old ones or phase them out in sequence.

The Bay Bridges are slated to be fully replaced by mid-late 2030’s.

Coast Guard is expected to issues theirs soon to allow for the makeshift pylons that will sit in the water to allow for construction equipment to be driven into the harbor vs. barged.

The new Key Bridge will have the 4th longest cable-stayed main span in NA (2nd in the US) and be the 5th tallest bridge by structural height after the Golden Gate, Gordie Howe, Atlantic Bridge (Panama) & Verrazzano Narrows.

Demolition of the old bridge is ongoing and will happen in conjunction with construction of the new bridge, which has shifted 260’ east after soil/ground sampling.

The Gordie Howe main span crosses over international lines and is in jointly owner by Michigan & Canada due in part to it being entirely financed by the later. Detroit doesn’t get a nickel of revenue from the tolls, Canada does until it’s paid off.

The Key Bridge will technically be the largest cable-stayed bridge entirely in the US.

Correct. The north shore jetty to my knowledge won’t need major modifications to accommodate the new alignment

2nd tallest freestanding structure(s) in the state. The Brandon Shores power plants original smokestack is 700’ tall and is located 2 miles south of the bridge.

That said, the new bridge will definitely be a nice backdrop/addition to the skyline.

Tallest structure in MD is in the Cunningham Radio tower (1280’) which sits a few hundred feet adjacent to the 997’ tall Candleabra TV tower (260’ height increase in the late 60’s).

Both are cable supported so are not classified as free standing structures.

its probably always going to be a big radio antenna in most places.

i’m sure this render is about what anyone would have imagined these days.

i think it looks just fine, great even.

i wish they would have left room at least for rail lines, but well, thats a can of worms.
