Right now they are on the upper roof so according to the elevat is 996.5, so what are they building on top of this? I'd like to know. how can it be almost another forty feet

The height of the tower has not been the ever ongoing question. It's the various site elevations that can be used to mark the starting point of measuring the total height. These building elevations of the top should make it more clear. The one being referenced in this latest height disucssion may be confusing.

That's the residential amenities level. If there wasn't, it would still be included in the height but not floor count.

But the diagram has what would be its floor listed as "Level 74 Roof." I thought the building is 74 floors.

There is no 13th floor. I don't know why news outlets and other sources don't take that into account.

My point in asking: I'm wondering if the developers of Waterline may have built the tallest roof in Texas, but not the highest top floor.

I cannot guarantee that the above elevations are the latest ones. But, if they are, Chase Tower's top floor is at 974' and Waterline's is at 972'.

I've never heard of using the height of the top floor as being the official height of the building. In any event, using this elevation drawing:

Nobody is suggesting that.

ETA: However, the height of the top occupiable floor is generally listed on the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat website.
In the case of Chase vs. Waterline, it doesn't make much difference. It does matter (somewhat) with buildings using pitched roofs and decorative spires to fudge their official heights.

Sorry for stirring the pot - the confusion over the actual/final height of this building is weird... I guess "tallest tower in *" conversations are fraught with these kinds of exchanges? Interesting...
