EDR outlines vision for mid-scale canola meal plant in Regina
A proposed facility could add jobs, boost exports and grow Regina’s role in Canada’s canola processing sector.
Martin Oldhues Martin Oldhues

REGINA — Economic Development Regina (EDR) has provided a model for a mid-scale canola meal processing facility in Regina.

Chris Lane, EDR CEO, said the organization took on this project to showcase the potential for future development of canola crush facilities in Regina.

“Clearly, there's an opportunity here. The potential for an ecosystem around biomass and agri-food products is really starting to take shape in Regina.”

The proposed facility would include 5.7 million tonnes of new canola crush capacity starting in 2027 around the Greater Regina Area. Annually, there would be an input of up to 14,000 tonnes of canola seed, with an annual output of between 4,000 and 8,000 tonnes of canola meal and 2,500 to 5,000 tonnes of residual oil.

Investors are also seeing the potential in Regina’s canola industry, as Lane said three or four companies “are poking around the idea of setting up a facility in Regina.

EDR said a strategic location for the facility would have access to Class 1 rail, the Global Transportation Hub, and proximity to major crush facilities.

As for target markets, those include the U.S., China, Japan, Southeast Asia and Africa.

“Creating more products with more value added right here at home [will] actually open up a larger number of trade avenues for our finished or partially finished products,” said Lane.

Currently, Cargill is set to open a canola crush facility in Regina in the second half of 2025.
There you go another canola crushing plant unbelievable

This may be why someone bought 400 acres of land around the industrial Park in Regina

Saskatoon’s land area is so much bigger than Regina s why is that?
Have you considered the basics? Like the population difference and a cursory inspection of a map?

Saskatoon's population is significantly higher. And its metro area contains, among other things, a much larger university campus, which includes fields used for agriculture.

Photos from various sites. https://www.flickr.com/photos/reginaconstruction/

Work is starting on the remaining several 3 story apartments in Westerra. Nothing started in the Costco lot. Not going to be paving out at the long term care site any time soon. Still many weeks of doing curbs and pouring sidewalks.

Your definition of "significant" seems to be subjective. According to this Statistics Canada table, as of July 1, 2024 Regina CMA had 282,032 residents while Saskatoon's had 367,336. This is 85,304 residents more in Saskatoon versus Regina. Saskatoon CMA is objectively 30% higher than Regina's.

I've lived in both cities but I'm from Regina. I happen to prefer Regina. But you, The mayor, are in some fantasyland level of denial.

85,000 more residence is not significant is a drop in the bucket so I don’t know what the heck you’re talking about

85,000 is a drop in the bucket? That's 1/3 of Regina's population. I commend you that I can actually read your last couple of posts but 1/3 is not a drop in the bucket.

Last night I noticed that Canadian Blood Services had a new warehouse at the corner of Fleet and Ross. The donation centre moved to south Albert so I guess they are gone from the old building or soon to be.

Looking at streetview they finally used the Dethridge street name. I remember seeing a story from several years back that the city thought there might be concern if they used it for a neighbourhood or residential street name. Found the story, was always going to be in the industrial area https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/dethridge-street-name-spooks-regina-developer-1.1355129 I guess the city decided to pass on the developers request to have it changed.

Again 85,000 people is not significant significance. This post was about how much more miles land area Saskatoon takes up in Regina‘s area. A lot of it’s not even city it’s just into the rural. And the way you think Saskatoon was growing it should’ve been 500,000 people by now but it’s not all that being said I love Saskatoon and I love Regina. Both cities are doing great.

Is that building there or or is this a new build?

Checking Google Earth the building had been there a few years, they are just a new tenant, also the loading dock area was paved this year. There are two nearby buildings built this year that I must have confused with the CBS building.

Nice. Are there plans for main floor retail? That really needs to be mandated for new dense construction in the city.

This is just an illustration. The actual build is likely to much different.

That's the kind of thing that should go in at the old Lakeshore Mall. The developer website irks me that it looks like they are going piss away that prime park adjacent space with single storey retail even if it is just one several buildings. https://harvard.ca/leasing/leasing-property?property_name=The%20Vue%20at%20Lakeshore

If we get a huge apartment like that at that spot it should be treated as a massive win for everyone.
