Late evening update:

- Paddy's Pond fire at over 200 hectares. Evacuation alerts issued for southern sections of Paradise and CBS. Fire is out of control and quickly growing.

- Kingston fire; ground crews pulled again, fire suppression not working today. Fire has moved into one of the communities in that area, sounds like there may have been more home losses today.

Another scorcher, 30.7 with a humidex of 40. Low of 23.5. There were a few popup storms, but they all dissipated before reaching my area and it remains 27 degrees late this evening

I don't assume that they were deliberately set, but it can't be ruled out. More likely it's accidental or from careless stupidity.

Huge range in the Fraser Valley today.

36.5 in Hope
36.3 in Cultus Lake
35.8 in Abbotsford
33.2 in Pitt Meadows
32.2 in White Rock
And…. 24.6 at YVR. God I hate the airport.

On the Island in Nanaimo (where my parents live now) it was a high of 35.1 and a tropical low of 20.2
37.0 in Port Alberni (often the island hot spot)
33.8 at Victoria Airport.

Today was most definitely the peak of summer on the BC coast.

35C with a humidex of 39 and sunny. Such a scorcher. It's more of a dry heat experience this time, dewpoint peaked at 15C this afternoon. Not BC Interior dry but not humid by any means.

Honestly I do not understand why this sprinkler is put there... it can be put in the busiest areas of downtown not a quiet street. Then the way it's angled, only half of gets to you, the other half goes to waste in the grass. It was still 30C at 10PM so definitely a lot of people would have enjoyed it rather than the dozens that actually did.

Low of 23C (humidex of 29) this morning.

The warmspot was Miramichi, NB at 37.6C.

Warmest low was Mont-Joli, QC at 25.2C.

Today was impressive... 6 provinces all with 35C+ temperatures (BC, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland). I am sure it has happened before but nevertheless noteworthy.

No surprise that the well ran dry at the cottage. This is what the creek behind looks like. Never before have I seen a sandbar in there. I mean, it's usually like no more than 15" deep in the summer, but this is crazy low. Actually, my inlaws tell me that 30+ years ago the creek used to be six feet deep at least. For as long as I've been going there, it's been like 18" max.

Back home, the cicadas are non stop noise making in the trees. Ever since a couple of you guys brought their name to my attention, I'm seeing more and more. Well, their body parts. Not only did I see one at my appointment on the sidewalk and then on my driveway when I got home, I'm seeing their wings over and over again the past few days. I counted seven, and all of them within a few feet of my shed door for some reason. I wonder if the hot and dry weather has anything to do with it.

21C in Moncton at 8 AM and noticeably smoky. I presume this is from the Irishtown fire which is still apparently out of control.

The high temperature today is now projected to be 36C. 35C tomorrow. There is still a 60% chance of showers on Thursday. It obviously won't be enough.

That tropical wave off of Cape Verde that I was worried about late last week has formed into tropical storm Erin. It is projected to become a major hurricane in the next 2-3 days. This is the potential storm track:

If it follows this trajectory, it will remain south of Sable Island and could affect the Avalon to some degree in about 8-10 days time. There is however a lot of chaos theory in meteorology and a direct hit on the Maritimes is not out of the question. Stay tuned........

Currently sunny and 23 at just before 9:30am. Noticeably less smoke in the air this morning, the sky is actually blue for once.

Highs near 30 this afternoon, including at the airport. I still haven't dug into the numbers regarding 30 degree days at the official St. John's station, but if it hits again today then there's no need to as I'm 100% certain the official station has never had 4 30+ degree days in one season. Could also hit 30 again tomorrow.

I should mention that there are spots in central and on the northeast coast that have a good shot at breaking all time highs today. Looking like highs near 36 in a lot of spots between Grand Falls-Windsor and Lewisporte.

There was a fairly stiff breeze by the water yesterday (thank God ) and the same is forecast for today which helps keep temps down. Rain is forecast for Friday and this is likely what I think of as the PNE Slump, the break in summer weather around the timing of the PNE. After the break the sun will come back but the temps are always much more moderate.

A hurricane would go great right now, especially one that either passes just east of, or makes landfall on the extreme southeast Avalon. This would put the heaviest rains over the Avalon while keeping the strongest winds offshore.

Currently 31 at just after 3pm. Airport has indeed reached a high so far of 30.3, meaning today is the 4th 30+ degree day of the year. I think there were only about 16 days since the airport station was established in the 1940s where temperatures topped 30, so 4 alone this year is nuts, with a chance for a 5th tomorrow.

wet and rainy last few days here helping wih our fires up here but powers going to prolly be out well into october if not longer im hearing 600+ poles gone many in very remote locations including our line

Fredericton is currently roasting at 35° and feels like 44°. All the trees are wilting or turing brown and all the grass is as brown as hay. It's very upsetting.
