Hot muggy weather continues, today's high was 29.9 with a low of 23.3. Yesterday was 30.9 with a low of 22.8.

Pics from the past few days (all in my backyard)

Absolute scorcher... 34C with a humidex of 40 and sunny. It's still not overly humid as the dewpoint is below 20C. Spent the whole day by the pool.

The mist sprinklers are back (at least some of them, some were turned off tonight for I don't know what reason). Was still above 30C at 9PM.

We had surprise clouds this morning so as a result low was 24C (humidex of 29). The clouds were history by noon.

The warmspot was Lytton, BC at 39.1C

Warmest low was Port Weller, ON at 23.7C.

21C in Moncton at 8 AM and sunny, going up to 35C this afternoon (humidex 43)

The high yesterday was 32.3C (humidex 40). It was my birthday (68). The whole family was over and we spent the evening by the pool.

35C again tomorrow, and 33C on Wednesday.

Thanks. I'm at no personal risk from the Irishtown fire. It's 20 km away, and, would have to cross the entire northern fringe of the city to reach me. I am also upwind and can't even smell any smoke. The fire is still out of control, but, the winds are currently light, and I don't think it is advancing rapidly. There are apparently about 900 structures at potential risk, including a couple of higher end subdivisions. It's across the street from one of the larger high schools in the city (where my son is a football coach), but, the school isn't at risk (unless the wind changes).

Photo of one of the water bombers doing their job in Irishtown.

You can see the second bomber in the background returning to Shediac Bay for another load.

There are three planes assigned to this fire - a spotter and two bombers. Great work!

It looks like the entire country is going to be hot this week.

We're going to hit 30C in Vancouver today, and 34C in the Fraser Valley.

Sunny, hazy and smoky, and 28 at just after 1:30pm. Highs near 30 again.

The humidity is lower, and the winds higher, than predicted today. Not great. And as SHH posted above, a new fire has popped up just outside of St. John's.

The dewpoint has dropped to 14C now... lower than I thought. If this holds up, we are going to blow past our forecasted high of 34C.

Paddy's Pond fire is growing fast. Industrial area ordered to evacuate - posts on FB begging for people with a class 1 license to help move vehicles. Started at the transmission lines to the city but Province doesn't expect to have to cut power and water bomb at this time as the fire has already moved beyond the lines with the wind.

Except us, the cool rainy summer continues. High of 26 tomorrow and 17 on Thursday! Hit 29 yesterday, probably the hottest day in 6 weeks!

How rare are smoky summers in St John's? It's fairly common here in August, but have barely had any smoke so far this summer. One benefit of a — summer...

This is my first, I think? We've had high level smoke and occasionally the smell in recent years. But nothing like this. Actually felt sick the other day.

I feel for ya. We've been lucky the last couple years and avoided that but there were some brutal days before that.

It's going to be a long night. The smoke downtown is sickly thick again. But it mercifully fades for a bit every so often.

Out in Mount Pearl and Paradise, it's worse.

Eastern edge of the suburb of CBS near the bottom of the image; the southern boundary of the suburb of Paradise near the top where the smoke is blowing over.

The good news with this fire, is that it is directly up against a fair sized lake to the fires northeast. With southwesterly winds, that should hopefully slow down a forward advance towards the city. Likewise, should it jump the highway, there is another fair sized lake to the northeast.
