Its been a while since I was out that way. 2016? IIRC maybe it was under contraction at that point.

Ive driven east a couple of times since, but went the US Insterstate route instead.

2023, parts of it was under construction but it was very nice to drive

Ford says that he's "all-in" on twinning the Trans Canada through Northern Ontario. Hopefully this is further incentive for Manitoba to get that last stretch of Hwy 1 done through the Whiteshell without delay. Maybe one day we'll see a 4-lane Trans Canada Highway from coast to coast?

Kenora bypass seems like it would be quite the project with the large rock cuts and other terrain related obstacles.

It’ll only be clear zone expansion for the current 2 lanes, though.

What would be the plan for twinning?

I don’t know. I just remember @Andy6 saying that the bypass was built with twinning in mind.

I drove it this past May, both ways. The progress they've been making on the 4-laning is very impressive, and over some challenging terrain. I only wish they could move as quickly with the MB Border-to-Kenora twinning. That is seeming to take forever, way longer than Rickford said it would take (as if anyone believed his wild promises).

By the way, if you've never driven North Superior in its entirety, it's a must. Most people are unaware of the wild beauty that lies between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie.

I too was wondering what was with him saying stuff when the F.N.'s along the route haven't even said anything about Phase 2.

I drove the stretch from T Bay to Marathon one April night in 2017. That was when I realized that those sharp curves on Lake Superior Shore weren't for the lolz. I did the rest in day time. It was gorgeous.

Surely you have more reliable sources of information than that!

I haven’t seen you on SSP in a long time. Did you come back just to reply to that comment?
Yea I may have to check with someone from MTO for that then. I do notice that the horizontal curves are designed for 120 kph, which suggests future twinning.

For what it's worth, if you play around with the property boundary layer on the Ontario GIS website, it looks like they where they had to expropriate private land to build the Kenora by-pass, they did expropriate enough land to fit a future second set of lanes.

In some spots it looks like they acquired excess land on the north side, in other spots it's on the south side. You can't really see the exact routing of the future twinning though as a lot of the by-pass runs though crown land.

Well, we'll see I guess.

I remember when the tender was published in the Winnipeg Free Press, it stated that the bypass was going to be 2 lanes at first and expanded to 4 lanes by some distant date - maybe 1989 or something like that.

Thank you. I ran out of things to say so I stopped 4 or 5 years ago. Maybe there are some new issues to pontificate semi-ignorantly on by now.

More pieces of the puzzle falling into place. Coming from Treaty 3 land in Kenora, I say don't underestimate the importance of steps like this.

That Kinew is indigenous may have helped with the case too.

Now that TCH twinning is happening for real, you’ll have lots to say.

Winnipeg Free Press is reporting that planning has started a project that involves twinning 14 kilometres from 3.9 kilometres south of South Beach Casino in Brokenhead to Highway 12

Planning is expected to take 1 to 2 years with construction expected to start shortly after that.
