Edmonton exceeding housing supply targets
July 21, 2025

At the halfway point of its Housing Accelerator Fund agreement with the federal government, the City of Edmonton is meeting and exceeding expectations for growing housing supply.

The City’s Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) agreement with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) is contingent on achieving an overall housing supply target by November 2026. As of June 30 - a little over 50 per cent of the way through the agreement - the City is 75 per cent of the way to that target.

“Homebuilding in Edmonton is on track, not just to hit our numbers, but to help the city maintain its affordability while providing housing options for everyone,” said Christel Kjenner, Director, Housing Action Team. “All Edmontonians should be able to find the housing they need in our city, whether they’re renting an apartment, buying their first home, downsizing or in need of non-market affordable housing. That’s what we’re working toward.”

The City was initially allocated $175 million to complete 11 initiatives designed to increase overall housing supply and encourage the development of housing that the market may not provide on its own. CMHC announced earlier this year that Edmonton was one of 27 “top-performing” communities to receive additional HAF funds. The City will now receive an additional $17 million for an additional 500 units, bringing the total allocation to $192 million.

Key Facts
Housing Accelerator Fund Targets
To receive its full funding allocation of $192 million from the federal government, the City of Edmonton must meet building permit targets between November 2023 and November 2026. There is an overall housing supply target, as well as subtargets for different types of housing.

Net New Residential Dwelling Units (by approved building permit) from November 2023 to June 2025:
Total: 26,903 / 35,934 (75 per cent)
Transit-oriented development: 7,133 / 7,308 (98 per cent)
Missing middle: 10,575 / 7,758 (136 per cent)
Other mult-unit: 4,587 / 8,520 (54 per cent)
Of the total dwelling units, 870 are affordable housing. This represents 45 per cent of the subtarget of 1,940 dwelling units.

Thank goodness we have Don as Chair of CHMC as he understands housing issues in Edmonton and Canada.

The Parks Tower 2 is going to happen in the next year or two, so that'll definitely be a tall crane as that tower will be higher than Tower 1.

It's the boarded-up building on the NW corner of 103 Ave and 106 St.

In a city of over a million people, there should be a crane or 2 up consistantly in downtown. I feel like I'm living Regina all over again.! LOL

'or 2'? how about 5-6 given our population growth? We are not going to make much progress with only 2 cranes up at a time.

Well right now we have none, so 2 would be a huge improvement!

Exactly ! With apparently 42,000 newcomers just to Edmonton in 2024, And roughly 1.5 million in the metro area, we should have several of them up in the still underdeveloped downtown core in my opinion !

I would say that 3-5 should be up as we speak and while a few are forthcoming, it's good perspective on Edmonton as a whole. It speaks to affordable endless greenfield housing that's attainable for most, it points out a continued concern over the need to improve and uplift the Downtown and Central Edmonton and certainly raises question marks about where national investors placing their capital.

Old YMCA

Whatever happened to the big plans to turn the old downtown YMCA into housing and a food hall?

It's currently under construction and planned to finish late 2026.
