Come to think of it, they could probably use the rebuilt Amphitheatre for viewing parties during events.

Or just take over half of Empire Field.

Looking at other MLS stadiums in the 22,000-27,000 capacity range; overall dimensions, not including plaza space, would be around 190m x 160m, +/- 10m. They are generally arranged with the long side running roughly north and south.

The entire Empire Field site would fit a stadium well, nowhere else in Hastings Park really has the space besides the race track.

Likely a stadium would get built where Empire was, but I would hope they would bring it closer to the intersection. A plaza area that integrates with the sidewalks better than old Empire, that was set further away.

I had BC Lions season tickets while they had a season at a temporary Empire Field. Weather aside, it's a great spot. Perfect for Vancouver soccer. I'm sure they could fit a 30-35k stadium in there, N-S orientation, and surrounding amenities.

Given the history with the Waterfront site, you would imagine that the Whitecaps organisation will be very aware of how much space a soccer stadium really needs to function successfully.

The dimensions of their Waterfront stadium was pretty tight between the Seabus concourse/Waterfront Station and ending at Cambie. 200x400m? I assume surface parking lots will be included to some extent even if you have transit options.

I doubt it, there are already surface lots elsewhere in the park.

Well you would expect the East Hastings lots to be redeveloped at some point. The one along Bridgeway is Playland expansion. Leaves you with around 600 spots (?) on the Renfrew lot? They wanted to turn the inner field of the racetrack into a parking lot in the master plan.

Race track 1100 spots in a below grade
Renfrew Surface or structure lot 700-2000 spaces

The owners had better donate to all SkyTrain projects passing the PNE if this goes through.

Gastro-intestinal issues after a trip to Mexico? Who'd have thunk it.

Suspicious illness to Vancouver Whitecaps players could see Sunday's game postponed
Har Johal
Jun 6 2025, 9:52 am

This weekend’s Vancouver Whitecaps match could be in jeopardy after several players experienced gastrointestinal symptoms during their trip to Mexico for the Concacaf Champions Cup Final.

The MLS Western Conference-leading Whitecaps (9-1-5) have had significant difficulty preparing for the Seattle Sounders this week, which is set for Sunday night at BC Place.

Whitecaps players and staff landed back in Vancouver at 6:23 a.m. on Monday, and the gastrointestinal symptoms ramped up over Monday and Tuesday. The club says 75 players and staff flew back with more than 50 per cent experiencing a variety of symptoms. ...

Happens all the time there on these kinds of matches. Players should be bubble wrapped to go.

MLS says B.C. Place 'unsustainable' for Whitecaps

“We get 17 days where we can play our games, and that’s it.”

Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber laid it all out, again, that the Vancouver Whitecaps’ stadium situation at B.C. Place, as currently set up, is untenable.

“The update is we’ve got to get a new stadium situation for the Whitecaps,” he said. “We have no plans to move the Vancouver Whitecaps. But right now, they don’t have a viable stadium situation.”

The Whitecaps could probly get the land for free at Swangard. Burnaby would love to land the Whitecaps, as they try and make Metrotown a real downtown destination. They would probly throw some money in too.

It's a perfect spot with Patterson Station a short walk away, and bars and restaurants would quickly move into the spaces along Kingsway. Some nice views from the stands as well.

Since this thread is up here, this could be massive for the Caps if it gets finalized:

Well obviously he's not coming to the Whitecaps from Bayern Munich in the prime of his career, but that doesn't change the fact that he's one of the best players of the last 20 years and he's choosing to end his career in Vancouver. He was tied to several other clubs including LA, San Diego, Chicago, NY, and Cincinnati (who owned his MLS rights) so definitely cool he chose us, timely shot in the arm to a Whitecaps team that has been dealing with some difficult ownership, stadium, and profitability news this year.

And besides, a 36 year old Muller is still better than 95% of the current MLS players.

Yes, the MLS doesn't get stars in their prime, it gets them before they become stars in Europe, or after they have been stars in Europe and are declining. But that doesn't mean that it isn't a big deal to have a star player late in their career, because the MLS level of quality is not as good.

He will make a big difference, and could possibly move Vancouver into major contender status for the Cup. I saw the Caps play Saturday and they look great. Good team, lots of fun to watch.

Let's be real, Muller is a bigger sports celebrity get for Vancouver than anything the Canucks have ever done in the history of their franchise even if he's 36. We signed Messier at 36 and that was a joke. This is definitely bigger in the global sports world than even if the Canucks had signed Gretzky at 36.

On the flip side of that, 99.9% of people in Vancouver had never heard of Muller before today.
