Sounds like a good idea! Are you an outdoor hockey enthusiast that wants to join the cause? I don't think I've seen any sort of public outcry for masts on the Marco Polo either. Just because people aren't being vocal about something doesn't mean it's something they wouldn't want.

I'm pretty sure ice hockey is still pretty firmly the most popular sport in the Saint John region right? Keeping that considered, I find the lack of outdoor hockey facilities here in Canada's oldest city is quite disappointing to say the least.

There was no outcry to get that multi million ice skating rink at Ihtoli-maqahamok built either, but we still got it. Though, I think there should have been a bigger outcry of disappointment considering they cheaped out and went with a subpar cooler for that facility.

As for, "public outcry for this from any of the users of the facility or other rinks" what other rinks? We don't have other outdoor hockey facilities other than this facility in question. All the other outdoor hockey facilities have been torn down and gone un-replaced.

The ball hockey people that use this facility were obviously happy to see this facility to get built, but even ball hockey only users would benefit from the installation of a roof. Plus, I imagine there is quite a lot of crossover between people who enjoy playing ball hockey, and who would also enjoy playing ice hockey in the winter.

If anyone is interesting in helping get something done about outdoor rinks in Saint John or has advice on how to approach the port about the opportunity that exists for an roof to be installed at this facility near Long Wharf, I'd be happy to hear your suggestions!

both Photo credits to Fred Grass from the Citizens for a Greater Saint John group.

I guess this top photo is from the past fall. It would be nice to see more photos of the cruise ships in here too, once they coming in on a weekly and almost daily basis in August and September

I've heard the port has plans to paint the light coral/electric blue cranes the same darker navy blue as the other cranes... I really hope they don't, as the lighter blue adds nice contrast and brightness to the West Side skyline. I think this picture really looks great with the blue cranes contrasted with the orange cans on the ship. It would be a shame to see all 6 cranes painted the same navy blue.

Minister of Transport and Internal Trade visits Port Saint John

Good to see Chrystia Freeland, the Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, visit Port Saint John and meet with Saint John's local leaders.

After the Prime Minister himself, the Minister of Transport is the most influential person in government when it comes to investments in Canada's federally owned ports. It seems Long and Freeland are on good terms, and that should bode well for Saint John and the Port.

I think the next time the Prime Minister visits Port Saint John, it will be for a big announcement.

With the noted exception of the actual MP for where the port sits...Williamson. At least I don't see him in any of the pics. This isn't Long's port anymore and I can't tell if 1) Williamson wasn't invited or 2) Didn't bother to show up as it wasn't a Conservative event.

Given his track record, I'd say #2.

Williamson is probably too busy chaining himself to that 400 year old tree in Lorneville, lol

In all seriousness, I don’t think Williamson gets along very well with Freeland, but who knows for sure. Perhaps he was invited, perhaps not

Quite a lot of the port is still within Wayne’s riding, including the port’s headquarters, but yes, the West Side docks and container port operations (the most visible , and arguably most important part of the port) are now just outside the boundaries of Wayne’s new riding. Though, I don’t think these boundary changes will change much if anything regarding Wayne advocating for the port on both sides of the harbour. At least, that’s how it seems so far.

Really unique-looking vessel at Long Wharf today, the 'Yellowstone'. Does anyone know what they are doing here?

I guess it's a pipe burying vessel. I wonder what type of pipe it would be burying here in SJ. 🤔

Also, how interesting is it that ships can sail under the flag of landlocked Luxembourg.

The YELLOWSTONE is classified as a Pipe Burying Vessel. I don't know exactly what they are doing here, but it spent the last two weeks in Bayside. I don't know why it was there either. I would assume it is doing preparatory work for some underwater pipe installation/maintenance/etc.

A post on LinkedIn this morning from someone working at the Port says they will be in town for several weeks. Must be preparing for a project, I assume.

I see on the port of Bayside website Yellowstone is due there on the 6th of August so I assume it’s just on layby at long wharf. The ship has been down in the states working on offshore wind projects and has been loading Aggregate in bayside for the past few months.

It’s docked for maintenance. It’s next task is placing rock for offshore wind projects.

Royal Caribbean canceled at least two visits to Sydney, NS. Instead two SJ visits will be switched to overnight stays, leaving at 2:00 p.m. Unconfirmed rumours of propulsion issues. Others speculate it’s because Sydney’s shuttle bus is broken down (seems unlikely as should be easy to hire a bus).

Could this be for the "floating dock" DP World was planning to install for automobile shipments?

Cape Breton has had a busy Labour disruption quarter. this Spring and Summer. ALL the Construction trades recently went back to work, on mainly Provincially funded public works projects, after being on strike for most of June and July.Who wants to send elderly clients through a potential work stoppage.

Saint John is getting a far better nightlife than Sydney.

I was in Sydney over the weekend. If you drive the highway between Sydney and Glace Bay, you'd see a company with dozens of tour buses. I'm pretty sure they aren't ALL under repair or for parts storage. So if they needed a few buses for the cruise ships, I suspect they could scare them up one way or another. I think there might be another lot in that area too but I'm not spotting it on Google Maps now; I may be misremembering where I was.

I will say, they should probably try to avoid having ships land here on a holiday Mondays. Half of what they could visit and see would be closed.
