Resurgo is the city motto.
Moncton has a habit of periodically imploding and then arising from the ashes like a phoenix.
1) - 1755, the
Grand Derangement. Acadian habitant farmers deported. The community lay abandoned for 11 years before repopulation by Pennsylvania Dutch settlers sponsored by Benjamin Franklin's Philadelphia Land Company.
2) - 1862, the town of Moncton disincorporates after the collapse of the Salter Shipyard and the demise of the wooden shipbuilding industry. The arrival of the railway industry allows for reincorporation in 1875.
3) - 1980s, the city loses the CNR repair shops, the Eaton catalogue warehouse and the CFB Moncton military supply base, all in short order. Over 5,000 people are thrown out of work. The future of the city appears bleak. By the late 1990s, the city regains it's footings with expansion of the call centre industry, and with a growing focus of regional distribution and logistics, supplemented by strength in retail, education and health care. Moncton's population has doubled in the last 25 years.
Curiously the collapses are roughly 120 years apart, followed by an interregnum of 10-12 years before the city recovers. We should be safe now until about 2100. I wonder what calamity will befall us then???
