Yeah, it's really cool and something befitting an indigenous name. I wonder how it will hold up should all that high density be built. Look high maintenance from an ecological point of view and 30,000 or more people within 15 minutes means a lot will be seeking refuge from the concrete and glass. That's a long time to go and maybe never.

I bring this up as Toronto ( which is hardly alone in this matter) doesn't have a great track record in maintenance of visions built to at least 95%.

Already lush from all the plantings crews have done the past few years, the new river valley, ponds and creeks now teaming with life.

When I landed in Halifax circa 1980, I was struck by the geographic similarities between peninsula Halifax and the peninsula downtown Vancouver sits on. They both have a big park at one end (Point Pleasant Park and Stanley Park) and there's even a suspension bridge in each; 2 in the case of Halifax.

It's very pleasing to see the changes in my hometown. High rises at Rosie and Young? Mid-rises on Gottingen? Still decades in the future, but one can now envision the day when the entire peninsula gets built out. It may take till ~2050 for it to start coming together though.

Halifax is kind of decentralized and has a lot of older originally pedestrian oriented urban fabric that became a bit too low density for much mixed use in the 20th century, so I feel like it's getting a big bang for the buck with infill. The infill does things like bringing back shops in old Victorian buildings or stitching together downtown with the universities and dockyard.

Increasingly it seems like the missing piece is transit. The city didn't really need anything in the 90's or 2000's but now is the time to plan LRT, streetcars, or something similar. There is sort of a BRT system but the amount of investment in it is tiny; during a time when the city adds 10k people the municipality builds just a few more blocks of bus lane.

The mechanical penthouse on the second tower is finally being poured. The retail units fronting King St have some activity with permits issued for a nail salon (unit 2) and an Indian grocery store (unit 1). Now that Kitchener has changed their public facing permit system one can't see applications however before the update there was a permit application for a convenience store (this will do extremely well with the high school across the street).
July 19th from Charles St between Borden and Stirling:

45 Courtland Avenue East, Kitchener

This one is now under construction with shoring completed and excavation starting on the site. The GC on this is Jackman Construction. This development has had some changes since it was originally approved since Kitchener has passed the Growing Together zoning. With the new zoning this property is SGA-2 which allows for 8 floors. The building is now 8 floors with 95 units and one floor of underground parking. It is to be constructed using precast from my understanding.

The developer has also bought the property adjacent to this one (63 Courtland) which was the original Schneider's facility before it moved down the street to the property at 321 Courtland which is now being redeveloped by Auburn as The Metz. 63 Courtland is being used as a staging area for this site. There are plans to develop 63 Courtland however those discussions are yet to be public facing but there have been behind the scenes discussions with various city of Kitchener staff members including Heritage staff.
July 19 2025, I will try to get a better picture in the coming weeks:

The Metz, 321-325 Courtland Ave E, Kitchener

Auburn has made getting a picture of this site rather difficult with the hoarding walls they have installed, the vantage point I took the last two from is now blocked off, it's still possible to get a photo but I was being watched so I'll try again another day. Looking through the site access off of Courtland they have what looks like a section or two of raft slab left to pour, columns going in for the first underground level, and then where I was taking photos from they have the second underground level started.

There's now 3 tower cranes up here, it looks extremely out of place depending on what angle you're viewing the site from.

The crane is now up with much of the foundation work completed. There is minimal above grade work completed, with what is completed primarily along the shoring wall at the back of the site. As is the case with most KW projects the GC is Melloul Blamey.

WINDOSR AND YOUNG

A major development is starting construction in North End Halifax. WM Fares is planning for 3x40 floors with ~933 residential units in a mixed-use development. The site is 2.5 acres and is located along a planned BRT route next to CFB Willow Park.

This one is going to be really visible. It is on a 60 m hill and it should be 120 m tall or so.

The architecture doesn't do it for me but this area was a total wasteland before and this density is enough to make a meaningful change while boosting demand for transit. I do wonder about the BRT concept and the densities they are permitting.

That little 10 storey building doesn't look dense but it is as it's built right up to the edge of the lot. It has a relatively high FAR and by itself probably has the density level of a Japanese city. Then next door are DND lands developed kind of like they are in the countryside.

A view of the North End where those Windsor & Young towers are (there are more photos of the construction site at the source):

The new buildings will be roughly behind the right cluster of buildings, in front of the ones farther away on the hill. They should look about as tall as the taller radio mast (which is something like 300 m in elevation, but is much farther away).

30+ towers built and under construction in Halifax, with Google Earth satellite imagery. Not sure if this is comprehensive.

Dartmouth is really going to look different in a few years. It has 2-3 towers just under the 30 cutoff under construction too.

I count around 50-60 projects under construction in this part of town on the Halifax Developments Blog map. I believe there's no hard cutoff on what's included but generally that would be substantial multi-unit developments, offices, or institutional buildings.

Excavation began in August on another 2x30 storey tower development in Halifax (now 10x30+ U/C or in the excavation phase). Spring Garden West:

Source

Not sure what the "future development" to the left is, although there's a lowrise non-heritage brick building with low lot coverage there that's probably a candidate for redevelopment. The one to the right is "The Promenade" which started a while ago but is delayed because they destroyed a heritage house while moving it.

Are there really ten plus 30 storey towers under construction or are you counting every tower in multiple phased proposals? Just sayin'; SSP Halifax is quite proactive when it comes to counting developments under construction.

These two look straight out of Waterloo. At least they make all the other mediocre 30 storey tower developments (that I know of) look alot better in all aspects.
