Yup, our climatic and soil conditions are impossible to stay on top of. That's why you pave a road in the tropics or a mediterranean climate once (on good building soil of course) and it stays pristine for decades without potholes.

Nothing to do with lack of maintenance. Not an embarrassment. Lack of understanding by you, sure.

"Warming climate" lmaO. We had the coldest winter in some time last year. The Earth's (Temp) has gone up/ fluctuated 1.0 F in the last 100 years. Quick google search.

The problem is City Hall not doing their job. I've been in Edmonton for 10 years and every year I've been here the general maintenance of this city deteriorates. Roads, bridges, general infrastructure. Grass, litter, graffiti etc.

Well then you shouldn't be surprised that the city has grown by at least 500,000 people since you moved here and the amount of roadway the City maintains has grown by the same amount, perhaps more.

There are also way more vehicles (and heavier vehicles than 30 years ago) using the same amount of lanes on the Whitemud, Yellowhead, Gateway Boulevard, 97 Street, etc., so more wear and tear on roadways than back in the day in addition to more roadway overall to maintain. Given City taxes did not go up to account for this during the Bill Smith years and the first couple years of COVID while the City grew, it's not surprising why there's an infrastructure maintenance deficit.

With critical thinking, it's not difficult to figure out why the roadways are in the state their in.

This sounds less like a grievance than a comment out of a lack of imagination. You turn to potholes because you couldn't think of anything else to say.

This is a site about construction. Learn a thing or two about road construction, or ask in genuine curiosity. Some of us here have experience in road construction, whether that be on the engineering, material, labour or maintenance side.

If it was out of genuine curiosity, you could ask and engage with the answers. Instead, it is belly-aching because you want to belly-ache. Be smart with your time and don't waste others.

The discussion was about car racing (F1 or Indy)...if we can't even fix our potholes, how can we even talk about bringing car racing to our sleepy town.

That is incorrect. You're making the point around Edmonton's roads in the context of being something we never spend effort on, not about racing on. Racing will never be done our streets, save for cycling and marathon racing. Motor racing is done on more sturdier pavements like we had at the airport or have at the racetracks. Sturdier pavements which are expensive and resource-intense.

Having lived most of my life elsewhere, one thing that I have noticed upon moving here is that Edmonton has such a wonderful urban forest but it serves so few people. Upon moving to Edmonton, my partner and I hiked all paved trails on both sides of the river from Henday to Henday. On most days the traffic on the trails was light, and there was little in the form of any development including attractions, wayfinding and basic services such as washrooms. Another observation is the pushback against any form of development proposals in the river valley. So few projects come to fruition. I can only guess that investors aren't willing to risk money due to the historic "no" mentality of the community.

^ All BS.

Just spent a few days in Mexico City (in the Polanco district). It's safe because the police does not allow nonsense. Shady people are removed in one minute. You can walk at 2 AM and feel extremely safe. Yes police cars and security officers are everywhere. But people go to restaurants and go shopping knowing that safety is taken care of.

In Edmonton, we are spending too much money to cater to a small percent of people that should be removed from downtown. very simple strategy.
