so far so good with the major queens bus routes redo, so they say:

Op-ed | Early successes in Queens bus network redesign

By Demetrius Crichlow
Posted on July 6, 2025

One week into Phase 1 of the Queens Bus Network Redesign, it’s going very smoothly — and that’s due to effective planning and a massive communication effort.

Thanks go to hundreds of volunteer ambassadors, mostly MTA employees, who are taking time from their regular roles to help educate and direct Queens riders to new service options for shorter, faster commutes.

LaGuardia Airport travelers and employees say they love the new Q90’s more direct ride from Flushing to that airport. We’re also hearing from Q98 Limited passengers who are thrilled to be on a route that bypasses congested streets to deliver a speedy connection between Ridgewood and Flushing.

Congestion pricing: Hochul touts success in first six months of Manhattan toll program

By Barbara Russo-Lennon
Posted on July 6, 2025

Traffic is down, business is up and money is being made, Gov. Kathy Hochul said on Saturday, the six-month anniversary of congestion pricing in NYC.

Hochul, along with other politicians and MTA officials, said congestion pricing has come with many benefits since it launched on Jan. 5. Among those benefits, the governor said, is the millions in revenue made from the controversial program that charges vehicles a base toll of $9 to enter Manhattan south of 61st Street, and fewer cars on the streets in the metro area.

“Six months in, it’s clear. Congestion pricing has been a huge success, making life in New York better,” Hochul said. “In New York, we dare to do big things, and this program represents just that.”

DOT picks landscape team for Park Avenue redesign, but fate of driving lanes remains unknown

By Barbara Russo-Lennon
Posted on June 26, 2025

Park Avenue will become greener and more pedestrian-friendly as part of its ongoing redesign, but the impact on bike and vehicle traffic remains unknown.

In its effort to put the “park” back in Park Avenue, the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) announced on Thursday that Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects and Planners, LLC, would serve as the firm to outfit the two-way corridor from East 46th to East 57th Streets with more plantings, seating and “innovative streetscape amenities.”

However, another part of the makeover includes expanding the median that separates north-south traffic. Although the redesign plan is almost a year old, the DOT still has not said if the street will lose driving lanes or add protected bike lanes.

As MTA moves ahead with 2nd Avenue subway extension, East Harlem locals brace for change

By Ramsey Khalifeh
Published Jul 15, 2025

Big changes are in store for East Harlem as the MTA ramps up work on the long-awaited extension of the Second Avenue subway.

The $7.7 billion project is scheduled to open in 2032, adding three new stations to the Q line. Two of them will be beneath Second Avenue at East 106th and 116th streets. A third would be an overhaul to the existing 125th Street-Lexington Avenue station, which would reshape a transit hub that sees more violent crime than any other in the city.

The MTA is currently working to finalize a contract to dig the tunnel for the extension. It represents a major step towards the completion of not just a transit line that’s been promised for roughly a century, but also a move that will change the face of one of Manhattan’s poorest areas.

Interviews by Gothamist found that for many locals, the project is a once-in-a-generation chance to make their neighborhood safer and more accessible. For others, it brings the risk of gentrification that could price them out of East Harlem altogether.

Bronx officials call for Amtrak to answer for Metro-North expansion delays

By Emily Swanson
July 31, 2025
Bronx Times

Gov. Kathy Hochul, MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber and Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, and Rep. George Latimer (then Westchester County Executive) joined the groundbreaking for the Metro-North expansion in 2022.

“Bronx elected officials are expressing frustration with delays in constructing the four new Metro-North stations on the borough’s east side, which will reportedly not be completed until 2028 at the earliest.

New stations are slated for Parkchester/Van Nest, Hunts Point, Morris Park and Co-op City, covering East Bronx neighborhoods that are considered transit deserts.

The megaproject is expected to create one-seat rides from the East Bronx to Penn Station, Westchester County and Connecticut, cutting current travel time to Penn Station by 50 minutes, creating new ADA-accessible stations and bringing 500,000 residents within one mile of rail service…”
