There is a ship in owned by Bernhard Shulte (Clemens Shulte) in port. Don’t remember seeing them before. What line are they carrying goods for?
Edit: I see it’s for MAERSK

Hapag Lloyd is implementing a low water surcharge on all traffic in/out of Montreal.

They do this every once in awhile. I would expect a few extra containers going through Saint John because of that.

H-L's announcement:

"with effect from July 15, 2025 (tariffing date), Hapag-Lloyd will implement a Low Water Surcharge for all cargo moving from North Europe to/via the port of Montreal as follows:

St. Lawrence Cont. Service - Route 1 (AT1) and 2 (AT2) - Westbound

USD 150 per TEU
We reserve the right to increase these levels on short notice, should water levels decline beyond current forecast levels."

For those watching the container ship capacity calling at Rodney Terminal, it continues it's upward momentum. Using a 30 ship average to help smooth the spikes, the port is on target to hit 3600+ this month.

Looks like a good location if that is the spot. Close to Harbour Passage and overhead clearance for the masts/rigging.

Yes, I just saw Barry post a bunch of pictures of the move, too. I am really happy for him, I know it's an important project for him personally. It's another addition to the tourist agenda and easily reachable in that spot.

I wonder if they will make a start on building a walkway around it or any other work this summer.

So this is indeed its final resting place? A bit closer to the water would have been nice, but it's not too far away from it either.

I hope we're actually allowed to climb aboard! lol

It would be nice to see her rigged with the masts in and the bowsprit on. I wonder how far they will go with the masts? The internet says the Marco Polo had royals so that would be quite complex to rig. (each mast would include lower, upper, topgallant and royal)

Windage and her stability in whatever type of cradle they have may effect how far they can go with rigging her.

Reading some of Barry Ogden's FB posts it appears they are still trying to raise the money for her masts and rigging. Unfortunately, I would expect that is going to be a very significant cost if it is to be done right.

If the masts, yards, hardware and standing rigging are not on hand and ready for installation it seems like she is far from ready to be placed on public display.

Don't get me wrong, I think this would be a fantastic addition to the waterfront but only if it properly completed. Realistically I think this needs an ongoing government and/or corporate funding commitment to succeed......not only to get it completed and set up in a proper display but to maintain it going forward.

This would be a significant draw for the cruise tourism business. There should be a concerted effort to make this happen properly. I don't know how much money is needed to finish it, but the return would be significant with dedicated volunteers bringing it to this point.

It's very rare to have something of this significance in any city, let alone have the volunteer effort to bring it to fruition. The story of the original ship, and the replication effort so far, is inspiring. It would be a shame if it was not properly promoting the city that, at the time of the wooden ship, was home to the fourth largest registered tonnage on the planet.

It's hard for residents to realize what attracts visitors to the city sometimes. Things like this sell themselves, and give the cruise companies, and local tour operators, a significant addition to their promotional literature.

The good thing is none of it has to be historically accurate or even functional. I wonder if aluminium might be a better material than wood for the masts, yards, etc. Not only can aluminium be painted to look like wood, it would be much longer lasting, and much more fireproof than wooden masts. Someone setting this thing on fire is definitely a concern where it sits right now.

Here's those pics/diagrams from Barry's FB page:

There seems to be some major differences between the designs of the computer model and what has actually been built.

So I don't think we can put too much stock for the finished product to look anything like these 3D models, let alone look anything like the actual ship did.

I think it's great Barry has been committed to the product, and I think we'd all like to see it get past the finish line, but let's not go overboard on the finishing touches here. This thing is far from an accurate scale model of the ship, but it's still a nice, non floating replica that pays homage to Saint John's extensive shipbuilding history.

It would be great to see it permanently laid up somewhere right beside the water, and where you could actually hop on board from the Harbour Passage. I certainly hope the plan isn't for it to just be a "statue" of sorts that we're not supposed to go on.

If it does prove to be a good tourist attraction and something locals like to visit, perhaps it could help Saint John get a 1:1 replica floating in the harbour one day... which would be a bonafide tourist attraction. I remember watching a video with Barry Ogden way back, and if I recall correctly, he said they have plans for building a 1:1 floating replica with a steel hull. Now that would be quite the sight to see, and something totally worth "going overboard" on all the finishing touches.

Really agree with this. I feel like we are in a transition phase right now with attractions, but over the next few years, things should really start to come together to provide an excellent draw for day or weekend visitors.

Marco Polo replica sails into its permanent location

https://tj.news/saint-john-south/marco-polo-replica-sails-into-its-permanent-location

Quote:
Part of that includes partnerships and Ogden said Port Saint John’s willingness to provide the replica a permanent home fits that bill perfectly.

“The port has been a saviour. The Port of Saint John is just…. They’ve been tremendous,” he said. “We’re really impressed with the port.”
Quote:
“We have to put the masts up and I’ve had those donated, the wood,” he said. “We’re looking at lighting it at night and we’re going to build a false dock about three feet out and put barrels around it. We’re going to do a figurehead and stern carvings. We’re going to do the riggings and we have a monument in front of city hall and that monument will come here and we’ll have a sign board that will tell the whole story.”

Just when those final touches are completed, however, depends on fundraising. Ogden said he estimates he’ll need to raise roughly $150,000 to complete the project as it sits in his mind. He’s not concerned, he added, as he has been successful with people volunteering, people donating and individuals and businesses providing gifts-in-kind. It took $3 million in private donations to build the replica.
Surely a few local businesses can cough up a little to get it finished.

$150k really isn't much at this point, and it really should be easy to get to the finish line at this point. I see Barry Ogden is even is still trying to get individuals to e-Transfer him funds the remaining needed on Facebook, but surely there's some big corporate sponsors that can step up, or even the NB Museum could find some funding to help see this project fully realized and open for the public to enjoy!

Surely for $150,000 or less, a roof could also be installed which could transform the Memorial Cup legacy project, pictured above without a roof, into a year round public recreation asset. Instead of being the nicest outdoor hockey rink in Canada locked up for the winter.

As it sits currently, this outdoor hockey facility is only available for hockey during the non winter season, and on non rainy days, because the the DTI claims the lack of roof makes the risk of falling ice and snow on would be skaters and hockey players below... yet, they don't shut down the sidewalk below the viaduct.

Barry Ogden has talked frequently in the City Hall chambers about the lack of rinks in Saint John, and the need to catch up with Fredericton and Moncton who are doing a better job in terms of their ice strategy. Why not start with this facility? Maybe Ogden could even help approach the port to get funding for a roof on this outdoor hockey facility as its nearby Long Wharf, the Harbour Passage, and other port owned land.

Adding a roof would make this facility look like an ODR version of TD Station.

Councillor Ogden, if you happen to ever read this forum, I hope you could consider pushing for funding to put a roof on this public hockey facility so that Canada's oldest city could have at least one proper public outdoor hockey rink for its residents and visitors to enjoy on rainy days, and the coldest days of the winter. Not only would a roof keep rain and snow off the surface, extending the life of the surface, and eliminate DTI's issue with flooding the rink in the winter, a roof will also keep the surface shaded and cooler making it easy to maintain an ice surface without a chiller.

As this facility sits today, it's fully exposed to 4 seasons of erosion and the freeze thaw cycle of Saint John's wet, snowy, and icy winters. Putting a roof on top of, and a liner on top of the surface to flood the rink in the winter, will not only help extend the life of the surface of his valuable hockey facility in Uptown Saint John, it will help keep natural ice frozen and shaded from the sun.

The new, Uptown skating rink is a decent attraction to bring people from all over the region to visit Uptown in the winter, but flooding the Memorial Cup outdoor facility for outdoor hockey would be an even bigger draw than skating oval on the coldest days of the winter.

Considering what the port's director of external affairs said in the article above, I think funding a roof for this outdoor hockey facility would fit with the port's agenda and values. To quote Mr. Beamish:

Quote:
“Basically, we’re always trying to be a great partner with the City of Saint John and we’ve partnered on a number of projects… and this just seemed to fall largely within that. We’ve done a lot of work down in that area with the Long Wharf slip and the breakwater and we’re just always trying to be a good partner,”
If anyone from the port actually reads this forum... would be nice if something could be considered here to help turn this outdoor hockey facility near Long Wharf into an all season recreational asset for the Saint John Region.

I'll be sure to email Barry Ogden and the Port about this opportunity to enhance this $500,000 recreational asset near Long Wharf and other port owned lands into something even better for our community.

The rink at Long Wharf is for ball hockey - not ice hockey. https://chl.ca/lhjmq/en/gallery/saint-jo...22-memorial-cup-presented-by-kia-legacy/

The stipulation that it's to be used for "ball hockey only" is hardly something that's set in stone.

Quite simply, this a hockey facility that could be used for ball hockey, roller hockey, and even ice hockey provided there is a liner and a plan to keep it periodically flooded and maintained. Even if it was only used for 50 or so of the coldest days per year, it's well worth the investment. Plus, adding a roof not only eliminates the DTI's issues with it being it flooded during the winter, it opens up the facility to be used on rainy days, of which Saint John has many.

☔️

The city currently wastes thousands every year on man hours, equipment costs, and wastes all kinds of water trying build up the ice level at Lily Lake by pumping water on top of a frozen lake. This costs the city way more per year than it would cost to put down a liner at the Memorial Cup Legacy facility and periodically flood it for use as an outdoor hockey and skating rink for the winter. Lily Lake has barely remained open more than a week per year, because the 18" ice requirement for their heavy equipment is very difficult to maintain.

🧊

This facility in question already cost $500,000. So why not spend a little more and put a roof on it?

Such an investment in a nearby recreational asset would certainly align with the port's community investment priorities, especially in that area around Long Wharf and the Harbour Passage that they have invested so much into in recent years.

Maybe the Port could even help get a proper chiller installed at this facility one day! But for now, I think installing a roof should be the priority for this important public recreation facility, which is currently closed during the winter season and unable to be used on rainy days.

I think there's a raft of partners that would be proud to step up and get something done to improve this facility with the installation of a roof, but the Port certainly comes to mind at the top of the list of partners, given the location of this facility.

Would be a great photo opportunity too... people playing outdoor hockey with the Marco Polo Replica and Port Saint John in the background on a cold winter day. I've always thought it would be great for the Port to re-invest in a new "Mill Pond Rink" on the West Side, there's lots of room for a new rink at Market Place West, and one did used to be there not too long ago.

Perhaps the City could provide the boards from the Belyea Arena and we could have outdoor hockey rinks on both sides of the Harbour thanks to the port!

🚢🏒🏗️

I haven't seen any kind of public outcry for this from any of the users of the facility or other rinks. If there are so many partners with money to burn on this, why don't you start a public campaign to gather support and achieve your vision?
