I know it’s just a basic crosswalk, but man, I’m really excited about the intersection opening up. It was such an embarrassment having the barricades up. One less thing to we have to explain to visitors.

Wasn't open yet on my my way to work. Must be happening soon as CBC was live on site at the South East corner. Dancing Gabe might be the first one to officially cross.

Someone mark my (unofficial) crossing time as 6:13

Mayor Scott Gillingham will do something Friday Winnipeggers haven’t been able to do legally in 46 years — walk across Portage and Main.

Gillingham, with Coun. Janice Lukes, chairwoman of the public works committee, and representatives from construction company MD Steele, will take the first steps following a brief ceremony planned for 10:30 a.m.

^ nope, not yet. I was just there and there are small barricades at the cross walk entrances at each corner and the pedestrian signs are still covered.

I had to double back and go my usual route.

I assume a 9am opening or something. Lots of people waiting around.

Goodness...after all the chatter, the intersection opened 30 minutes ago, and no pictures or commentary. What gives?! Also noteworthy, no reports of accidents, pedestrians getting run over, or the city coming to a standstill due to traffic congestion at the corner. We can all exhale now.

Theres no pictures because unfortunately no one survived the 38 car pileup. Tragic.

Hearing it was caused by the underground circus collapsing due to all the extra weight of the pedestrians.

hilarious that they had a thousand people ready to take the first crossing and they made it only for politicians.

Gotta love all the politicians lining up to take credit for such a "monumental, progressive, urbanist, city-changing initiative" when really it was a choice made because it was the cheapest option and the Mayor is generally fiscally conservative so it was the default choice to make.
