can someone explain to me what chemical in the road paint was a problem? Because it seems to me if we are expending significant resources year over year, on not keeping up with line painting (which is a legitimate safety concern), then we might be missing the boat. Not to mention I have an extremely hard time believing that the latex one offers enough of an environmental improvement to make up for the loss of efficiency, and I would be genuinely shocked if it was not also at least somewhat environmentally problematic.

No kidding. Resource waste aside, how environmentally problematic was the oil based paint? Was it releasing more into the environment than the carbon emissions from having multiple painting crews of three or four trucks drive around and repaint lines on every major road in the city each year?

The solvents in the oil based paints were the problem. It may not have been a problem on the pavement but the pollution byproducts created in the production of the paint.

Regarding the lack of lines in Winnipeg, the media was reporting that Traffic Services was going to tender for a private company to help out this season with striping the streets and next year the city is going to buy a second street line machine.

I have always thought that stuff like this should be an automatic purchase based on the number of line miles painted. i.e. one line stripe truck for every 🞵🞵🞵 hundred miles of lines painted. With two trucks Traffic Services may be able to 2 rounds of line painting on the 1000KM (2021 number) of roads.

The city was also looking at doing 3M embedded tape lines but that's more expensive and they eventually fail. The PPP Disraeli Freeway had them when it opened and I noticed that the embedded stripes slots now have paint in place of the tape. Pembina Hwy by Plaza Drive also was a test site and as I don't drive that way I don't know the status of those lines.

Which is usually accompanied by at least two half ton trucks with yellow flashers warning of the lane marking truck driving in the middle of the road.

Young, uninformed Gen Zers and Gen Alphas, run by uninformed Gen Zers. I follow that page, but I try to stay out of the comments. Way too toxic in there anyway.

The city literally has 1 line painter truck. I remember watching an interview with a supervisor of the crew saying that if the city had another one, it would literally cut down the time to paint the lines around the city by half. Gotta put it in the budget, plus additional staff to run it.

saw my 1st pedestrian cross P&M today and they had a rolling suitcase so i assume they not a local! i guess they saw the painted lines and went for it, lol

One of my "pro open" anecdotes has been that I once overheard an out of towner at a concert say they were staying at the Fairmont, but that it was "weirdly confusing" to get from the hotel to the Burton.

Outsiders instinctively want to cross there.

Out of town colleagues are here from London, ON, staying at the Fairmont. They crossed the street last night, and just figured that the barricades and covered signals meant general construction was going on. They felt safe crossing, so they did.

I will be crossing it every day enroute to and from work. I am curious to see how if effects my timing, rather than using the current methods to get from Portage to the East Exchange.
