Who's this 'we' he's talking about? The whole planet? Is Saint John supposed to smugly opt out of shipping to assuage his ego, right when we're getting value-added-in-Canada stuff finally happening with Americold? Is he not familiar with the port's potash and petroleum products business?

One day this guy is giving a vociferous defense of a chemical plant, the next day he thinks they shouldn't be able to bring their products to market.

Harris seems to be covering his ass for future political runs. He’s trying to appeal to all groups and failing miserably. More manufacturing in the city and surrounding areas woukd be amazing and would lead to more traffic at the port, however the port is growing at a great rate and will continue to grow. Harris is just a idiot.

I love this post. Harris has always been an ego-maniac and this is just another example of it.

It's kind of backwards, isn't it? Wouldn't it make more sense, from a cynical 'political future' perspective, to go NIMBY on Lorneville and full steam ahead on growing the port? With AIM gone, there is precisely zero public opposition to the port's success. Mild (justified) gripes about railroad traffic snarling up the west side are as far as it gets.

Complaining about global shipping and slave labour are totally out of left field, along with the Green comments. The EXISTING 'agrarian' economy in New Brunswick is pretty committed to bringing our products to global markets in conjunction with big agribusiness players, whether Liberal blueberry farmers up north, or Conservative potato farmers in the river valley.

Not if Harris and other councillors are privy to non public information that port expansion could involve Lorneville and the industrial park, or could even involve a new, deepwater port at Lorneville. All of which could be a possibility...

The port's CEO was very clear in his address at city hall, that this industrial park expansion will be a huge opportunity for growth at the port. But who knows what else could be planned for Lorneville, which could be more directly related to Port Saint John expansion. It's possibly Harris and other councillors know some things on this front, that the public does not.

When it comes to Brent Harris, I think he just can't help himself... he likes to get into arguments and emotional battles with constituents who are opposed to something he'd like to see get done. I think he's beyond self centred, and has very shown very little decorum and politeness towards constituents that don't share his views and priorities. Moreover, I 'd say he's downright rude and combative with residents of this city that disagree with him.

Harris really likes to pick and choose what he gets offended about, or what he thinks Saint John should and shouldn't consider a priority. I think the city is very fortunate he didn't run for mayor last time, as he might have actually won, which would have been a joke. I hope he doesn't get back on council, and that it teaches him some humility, especially if he plans to stick around Saint John as some sort of activists or "thought leader" as I'm sure he considers himself already.

This latest hot take of his, though, is among the stupidest and most ridiculous I've seen from him yet. It's utterly asinine and beyond regressive to suggest that Saint John should shun port development, and shun the opportunity for growth, at a time where the Prime Minister is talking about making transformational changes in our trading relationships, and how Canada's ports will play a crucial role in these projects... all to make some sort of stand against global capitalism? uhh...

Saint John is one of Canada's five container ports, and the fastest growing container port in North America. Port expansions, across Canada, will undoubtedly qualify for more federal funding than many of other prospective "projects of national interest", and better qualify for access to the new, trade corridor fund than most other projects. The PM has already been clear that provinces should temper their expectations when it comes to levels of federal funding for these so called, "projects of national interest". Yet, here in Saint John, and despite "Don Dom's" recent comments, I think we can be quite optimistic for federal funding relating to port expansion projects, since Port Saint John is owned by the government of Canada.

We're at a crucial point in history where the Port of Saint John could see some of the biggest expansion projects since the construction of the West Side Docks, and Brent Harris is like actually putting garbage, anti-progress takes like out there. I don't understand who he thinks this appeals to, unless he's planning another major shift in his next career move. Maybe he wants a job at Greenpeace? lol.

I'd say the only thing consistent thing about Brent Harris, is that he consistently pisses people off on the left, the right, and the centre.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... I hope they keep the light coral blue colour of the newest cranes.

The coral blue really adds some nice contrast and brightness to the skyline, that I think will be lost if they paint them the same darker navy blue as the older cranes.

I think the picture in the post above really illustrates how the two different shades of blue work well together.

The TJ picked up on the vehicle import pilot. Not much additional detail was discussed beyond what was previously mentioned.

https://tj.news/saint-john-south/pilot-project-could-see-vehicles-imported-to-port-saint-john

Quote:
“We are moving forward pretty quickly,” he said. “It’s in discussions around trying a pilot because there’s a lot of things we need to figure out like how the hand-off works, where does it go from here, we need to work with the union to figure out all the pieces and parts of that puzzle and just make sure everyone’s alligned.”

Once that’s all dealt with, Smith said, they’ll be ready to try a pilot to see how it works and, if that’s a success, the discussions begin on how to grow the business.

The hope, he added, is to have the pilot done within the next three months.
Quote:
There are still aspects to be determined, Smith noted, pointing to how those vehicles would then leave the port. He pointed to both train and trucks as potential means to have the vehicles then shipped off from the port property.

I would think space would be a limiting factor here. Autoport Halifax in Eastern Passage has a pretty big footprint.

If they are investing what I am sure is significant investment to pilot this, I assume they have at least the basics like location figured out.

DP World has been nothing short of impressive with how they have handled the Port.

It sounds like this could be a lot of jobs if it were successful.

This is exactly the kind of opportunity that I envision fitting in Lorneville. There is not enough room for this on the existing port footprint, even if AIM becomes available. i think what they are doing this summer is just getting companies reconsidering Saint John in that kind of capacity.

I think they are just bringing the cars into the port, putting them on autoracks, and moving them (long trains of autoracks through Simms Corner) to a currently available storage facility, possibly not even in New Brunswick. That's just my guess at this point though.

They would still need the same "floating dock" configuration to work efficiently in Lorneville, and something like that could be easily moved. The only issue at this point that I see is that Lorneville may still be several years away being able to situate that. I have not heard anybody mentioning Lorneville in that context, but it is one of the few places where this would work efficiently.

I'm sure they have a location. I'm just questioning how big of an operation this can grow into given space limitations in the port. Neither Long Wharf nor Lower Cove show as having rail access any more so that might just leave the Westside Docks. Longer term maybe AIM site or filling in the slip between 10 and 12?

Autoport in Halifax is about 100 acres and has space for 13,500 cars. For comparison both Long Wharf and Lower Cove are less than 20 acres , the AIM site is 25 and all of DP World is only 66. The port is actually pretty small in terms of total land area.

Lower Cove Terminal is like 800,000 square feet, can easily have rail access added, if needed, and features an interesting ramp in the southwest corner... and it's not like roro is a particularly objectionable or necessarily permanent use of this land for nearby residents and businesses.

Interesting info on how an Autoport operates in this 2019 story about Halifax.

Barry Ogden made another post regarding the Marco Polo replica last night. I am still trying to figure out exactly where it's going, but it sounds like something may happen this year?

Quote:
We now have a home for the Marco Polo replica on our waterfront. We still have to raise the money for the the masts and rigging and some other work.
Thanks to the thousands of people. for making this happen - the Marco Polo will be moved very soon to her permanent home near Long Wharf and Harbour Passage in beautiful Saint John,NB.

Latest google earth image of Long Wharf for reference.

Would she fit under the bridge with the masts in? I read somewhere the replica is 90 ft so if the masts were proportional to the original I there would certainly be a clearance issue.
