Walked DTPHX yesterday with visiting family from Europe to take them to the Dbacks game at Chase. Roof open, great weather, lots of people...and lots of homeless and people on drugs littering our streets. The empty Chase tower is really showing its abandonment with broken glazing, the fencing and lack of care is quite an issue being the highest structure in town. So, investing and living DT is a risk and sacrifice for folks in nicer communities, and something our family kept commenting about.

Can't wait for ASTRA and other project to get off the ground, including a wider variety of retail for basic services and community support. SO, city leadership needs to be more proactive in cleaning up our streets...its a huge eye sore and deterrent for growth.

All irrelevant, non-Astra news posts nuked from orbit – no survivors.

Michael Scott survived. Maybe he's channeling Carter Burke reacting to Ellen Ripley's suggestion.

During today’s Economic Development and Housing Subcommittee meeting, the economic team stated that Astra is expected to break ground later this year.

It keeps changing, IMHO I’m not holding my breath especially in this current economic climate.

Good news but I'll believe it when I see it. Countless articles say projects are "moving forward" when they really aren't these days.

Nothing really new here, but for what it's worth, start at 12:42 if it doesn't do so automatically. I few nuggets about Chase Tower as well, but as some of said...we'll see.

Thanks for posting. It really is crazy that the population of downtown is up ~150% in 10 years. As for Astra, over the course of the video it went from groundbreaking this summer, to by the end of the year, haha. But I'm holding out hope!

I was about to mention that someone had mentioned here that they have until the end of the year to commence construction, or else they will lose their financing for the project?

If that's true I'm not that hopeful, I was pretty excited for Phoenix's first skyscraper.

Heard at our office that many developers are holding off and hoping for interest rate cuts for a better investment on a couple of our projects. Maybe this is a factor here as well??? Hope this gets built soon!

Can't imagine that is not the case with just about any major new project anywhere in the country.

Is this news? I don't remember hearing Clayco being specifically associated with the project. Also don't know anything about the publication, but it seems legit-ish?

https://mycnr.com/project/clayco-to-build-phoenixs-180-mil-astra-tower/

Quote:
What is expected to be the tallest building in Arizona is preparing to break ground, to be constructed by Clayco.

Once completed, the $180 million Astra Phoenix will be the tallest building in Arizona, taller than Chase Tower, which has held the title since it was built in the 1970s.

The project is anticipated to come into being over a 36-month construction timeline.

Astra Phoenix will be comprised of two distinct towers. The taller of the two will reach 44 stories high and 542 feet tall, some 60 feet taller than Chase Tower’s 483 feet. The Astra will offer retail, office space a 229-room hotel and up to 700 luxury multifamily apartments.

The new buildings are set to replace the parking lot adjacent to the YMCA and Sun Devil Fitness Center.
