These “Gatineau” (Hull, Aylmer, Gatineau) posts need their own sub-category. They are not City of Ottawa and definitely not Downtown.

It's Downtown & City of Ottawa. Most people would consider the Island of Hull an extension of Downtown. We seem to include anything inside the Greenbelt, + anything between the Gatineau River and Gatineau Park in the Downtown & City of Ottawa thread.

We've had discussions of reorganizing the Ottawa forum, but someone would need to make that their full time job for no pay.

Great, I nominate you. You can move one a day until it’s done. Easy peasy. So now that it’s settled, when do you start?

I've looked into making this kind of a change in the past, specifically, renaming subforums and creating a separate one for the Gatineau projects, but it's not something that moderators can do, apparently.

I will take on the task of inquiring about how to go about making this change with the administration folks.

I don’t really see why Gatineau projects should be pushed into a separate subforum. Downtown is downtown, suburbs are suburbs from a single metropolitan area. The tendency some people have to treat the other side with condescension—or to retreat into localism—is part of the problem, not the solution.

It's merely a data categorization system within the existing Ottawa-Gatineau forum to make development threads easier to find and manage, just like we have urban and suburban groupings. If people want to treat the other side with condescension, they're going to do that regardless of how our threads are organized. We might be one metropolitan area, but we do have different governments, different rules, bylaws, and approval processes, different architects and builders, and different issues that don't apply to the other side of the Ottawa River. If a Gatinois wants to focus their attention on local projects, this will make it easier to do. It also would allow us to do away with the [Gatineau] prefix, which currently serves the same purpose, but in a cluttering way. Gatineau is growing and it needs it's own space.

I see that you list Montreal as your hometown. These are the same reasons that there are South Shore, North Shore, and Laval subforums in addition to the Montreal one, even though that's a single metropolitan area. The same structure exists for other cities as well. It's really just about data management.

It would be nice to see them:

Downtown & City of Ottawa (everything Ottawa inside the greenbelt)
Gatineau (everything Quebec side (Hull, Aylmer, Gatineau, etc.))
Suburbs (everything Ottawa outside the greenbelt (Kanata, Orleans, Barrhaven, etc.))

It’s nothing against Gatineau as someone suggested. I agree with rocketfish. The jurisdictions are very different and deserve their own sub-group. I would also settle for just putting all Gatineau projects into the suburbs heading, but that may ruffle some feathers with some.

I'd much rather see downtown Gatineau projects in the Downtown folder than something in Barhaven or Orleans. Those should be with suburbs.

- Downtown: - within 5km of Parliament Hill
- Inside Greenbelt: - within 15km of Parliament Hill
- Suburbs: - outside 15km of Parliament Hill

I'm going to start moving some stuff to the Gatineau sub-forum. These changes should make everything a bit easier.

EDIT: to be clear, the Gatineau sub-forum is a proposal and building thread, right? Anything else should remain in the other sub-forums as they are?

Sure, go for it. Start with anything tagged [Gatineau], then see what's left.

Yes, that's the idea.

It should be Downtown, Inside Greenbelt (regardless of distance) and outside of Greenbelt (regardless of distance).
I would put one for Gatineau as a whole

OK folks, as you can now see, Gatineau finally has the sub-forum it deserves. Thanks to J.OT13, we already have 60+ threads moved over to the new folder. Gatineau development is booming!

Here's the new breakdown for development projects & construction:

Downtown & Urban Ottawa (inside the Greenbelt)
Suburban Ottawa (outside the Greenbelt)
Gatineau (all areas of Gatineau)

When creating a new thread in the Gatineau sub-forum there is no longer a need to preface the title with [Gatineau], or any other sector name.

I noticed that when we're on a sub-forum, the quick links at the top aren't updated. Gatineau does not appear.

I'll have to inquire about that...
