^lost opportunity with the City Center airport as I once heard that they would have had to make the runway longer in order to keep it as a major Edmonton airport ! I had heard that it meant extending it to where Kingsway Mall is and bulldozing it to make room !!

The International Airport should have really been built there CFB Namao is now - less than half the distance from Downtown compared to EIA yet far enough that it would have minimal height overlay and noise impacts on the City.

Why don't we plant 10000 of these around on blvds and key areas again?

Probably because they are smaller and less hardy than what is required to survive as a relatively low maintenance boulevard tree.
A quick google says cherry blossom trees are typically Zone 5 through Zone 9 hardiness and Edmonton is Zone 4.
There are some Zone 4 versions, but they are less common and I would guess more susceptible to die off when exposed to the snow piling, dirt, salt, etc. you would see on a boulevard.
