300 million for the same situation we have on 200 West? That's a big fat no from me. Sounds like 200 W will be kept as is too. I don't see how this will contribute to a better downtown. Japantown/Block 67 will be bookended by gaping holes at both ends, and the church will see them on the other side.

Instead, use a fraction of the funds to institute traffic calming on 300 W. Then bring 200 W back into the daylight. Though not my preferred solution, you could even pedestrianize 200 W. It hardly sees traffic anyway. Although what you can do with 200 W probably depends on the convention center plans.

$300 million would be an excellent initial commitment to the Rio Grande Plan, and it would do a lot more good for the city than this.

Disappointing that bad ideas can be snuck through the legislature like this.

Nice looking building, but I wonder how they passed inspection with that overhang on the eastern sidewalk. I've walked past there, and there's like 1.5 ft of room on one section of that sidewalk. Definitely couldn't fit a wheelchair, let alone a wide person walking.

Looks like the sidewalk was built inside the property line. Not sure what the law requires here but the city might just be on the hook to build the sidewalk farther into the roadway.

Ofc I rather the money go elsewhere (especially to the Rio Grande plan)... but of all the options they are considering, this seems like the best one. I do agree it is a wild project to casually spend that money on, for the record

The sidewalks will stay at grade, only 1 block, most minimal trax impact. I imagine they won't drop the road all the way down and the plaza will be elevated a bit, but who knows. I used to live at pierpont/300w and HATED crossing 300W and I would have seen this as an amenity. There is a huge need for an activated east-west, pedestrian-oriented street. 300S exists but you're still waiting at long high speed crossings even when there is little traffic

I question whether they would actually build this since it is preliminary, though. I feel like the traffic light situation would be unsatisfying unless they just make the cars go slow, but at that point why are they building it? I don't think they could fully eliminate the lights on either side, especially bc South Temple has trax. Are the blocks long enough to facilitate a reasonable grade with this?

Does someone want to make a post listing all the current proposed highrises in the downtown SLC area? It's been a while, and might be what we could all use.

Right now, there is the Hines tower on Main, the tower on W Temple and 4th south, the Snowbird tower, the West Quarter towers, the tower on the former Red Lion hotel property, the Sand Dial office tower on Main between 4th & 5th south, 468? Main, the proposed hospital, and proposed ghost towers by SEG.

I don't think this is really like 200 W because this will keep pedestrian traffic above ground. I'm definitely still skeptical of this proposal though, as I am with any UDOT and state-sponsored proposal.

Didn't really see anyone mention it, but Salt Lake City's newest census estimate has it above 217,000. It's grown almost 20,000 people since the 2020 census and has the 2nd-biggest population growth in the state in that time behind Saratoga Springs. In the 2024 estimates it had the most growth in the state from 2023. All the apartment building is really paying off.

It looks like foundations are going in for two new developments at 400 North and roughly 465 West. This is happening on both the north and south lots. (Unexpectedly, I might add.) Both builds have been mentioned somewhere in this thread quite a long time ago. This neighborhood has arguably the densest housing in the city outside of Sugarhouse.

Here's an article on the demolition of those two towers.

Demolition Begins at the U’s Medical Towers and Plaza Townhouses. Construction crews started the abatement process in October 2023, and now that demolition has begun, the project is expected to be complete by early Fall.

I've been warning about 300 West over a year now.

Public money to build an urban-unfriendly private playground for a billionaire, so he can value capture Jazz ticket holders who would have otherwise patronized other restaurants in town.

But hey, I didn't vote for Utah's legislature.

What's cool about that is that we did it without building any suburban sprawl. Cities like Saratoga Springs still have/had allot of empty land to build on. This proves that people want to live in the city and we can provide housing for them.
