May flyover. 11 cable pairs by my count on the north side of the tower, 9 to go, and girders are now extending south off N1 pier.

Thanks!
Here a couple of screenshots from the video.

That transition piece from the north will shorten the distance to the joint with the cable stayed part.

Nice work on the ped/bike ramps and vehicle off-ramp.

From the twitter feed:

This is a look at the underside of the bridge deck in @CityofSurrey.
Can you see the red temporary access platform?
This platform travels on rails below the bridge deck, allowing workers to access this area.
It will be removed after construction is complete.

Here’s a close-up of April’s final concrete deck pour for the south approach.
The light grey concrete seen in the middle of the photo is freshly poured concrete.
Near the bottom of the photo, burlap covers newly poured concrete to support the curing process.

Most bridges have some sort of permanent gantry below the bridge deck to allow access for inspections and maintenance. It seems wasteful to build something temporary, remove it, and then build something very similar intended to be permanent.

You would think so, but most clients don't want you using their permanent equipment during construction. It needs to be a "new" product and using a gantry like that for a few years during construction would definitely have impacts.

From the project twitter posted today:

This photo was taken from the south side of the bridge deck, looking up at the bridge tower!
Did you know? The #PattulloBridgeReplacement bridge tower is 167 metres tall, making it the tallest bridge in B.C.

Posted June 5th:

To get to this point on the tower, workers in this photo had to climb up about 45 flights of stairs!

Crews have completed girder installation for the bridge’s north approach in
@New_Westminster
!

This photo from May shows a barge crane lifting the final girder into place for the north approach. These girders will be connected to the bridge’s main span.

It’s strange the old Yale rd overpass is different surfaces. Cement for the lane that comes from the bridge and asphalt for the other 4 lanes. I guess to save money?

I hadn't picked up on how prominent the weathering steel architectural feature (?) along the central part of the main span would be.

Yeah, I also just noticed that when watching this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1FazCbjLi0 (embedded video didn't work...)

Had to go back and look at previous renders to confirm. Never noticed them before. There also appears to be a part that extends over the edge, perhaps a viewing platform of sorts.

Thanks for the great picture update!

Now with the Old Yale Road overpass open, between the Pattullo Bridge and Tswwassen there is only a single set of traffic lights remaining at 80th street on the SFPR.

My OCD desperately wants them to upgrade that intersection ASAP to an interchange, making the SFPR a true freeway from the Pattullo to Tswwassen.

From the Pattullo to the #1 going east… now that is another story, far from being the free flow artery it should be.

Wouldn't that "architectural feature" need to be removed when the bridge is expanded to 3 lanes? Perhaps it's associated with that? Strange it doesn't go the whole way then. Almost looks like a rain gutter/shield?

Those are wind fairings.

Quote:
Our engineering team built a 1:150 scale model of the new bridge for testing in a wind tunnel located in Copenhagen, Denmark. The results of the wind testing provided important engineering design considerations for the engineers, including the layout of the wind fairing that will be installed on the outside of the bridge deck.

Wind fairings are structures that attach to bridges to deflect strong winds.
No idea if they will be incorporated into the pedestrian walkways. It doesn't look like it.

Maybe the pedestrian path will deflect the wind in a similar manner.

I believe this is the first mention that artwork will adorn the bridge.

Quote:
To recognize the deep historical and current connections of First Nations to the Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project area, First Nations artwork is being integrated into Project elements both on and off the new bridge.

In the coming months, artwork will be installed on the lower piers, upper tower and crossbeam of the new bridge.

Awesome! Would be cool to get murals on the Skybridge too to complement this in the future.

Heaven forbid we have any sort of lighting feature or conspicuous art. I'm so glad they're brave enough to put art on the lower legs of the bridge where no one can see it and possibly be inconvenienced by the sight.

What's the point?
