So, can we hope to get
intercity Air Canada bus service now in New Brunswick? Or at least fund a better intra-provincial bus system that even
tries to coordinate and be a transportation option for intercity air travel?
If YQM, YFC, and YSJ were connected by an airport bus system, it would greatly enhance the connectivity of the three cities, and it would eliminate the conundrum of relying on friends and family to drive you to an airport in another city, or having to deal with parking in another city. The annoyance of flying out of a different city for a cheaper fair, is all too common in New Brunswick, and there's just not a lot of good options to get to another city for a flight, other than driving yourself or relying on someone else to drive you. An airport bus service would fix this.
YQM would be the central terminus of this system, of course.
With multiple busses going in opposite directions on this route, people from outside of Greater of Moncton may never have to drive or ask for a ride to YQM again, and it could also be an option to get to the airport instead of taking a cab for people in all three cities. Moreover, with high ridership, it could result in a pretty significant reduction in carbon emissions, and if electric busses were eventually utilized, the emissions reductions would go even further.
We may never see the return of passenger rail service between Saint John and Moncton in our life times, even though the tracks still exist, and it
is possible. Improved bus service is just a lot more realistic of a goal to work towards, since the costs of running a bus service are substantially lower than the costs associated with passenger rail service.
For people in Saint John, having this type of bus service would greatly lessen the annoyance of flying out of Fredericton or Moncton, which people in the Saint John region are disproportionately faced with, when booking flights, but the service would still be useful for people along the entirety of the bus route, as YFC and even YSJ can sometimes be the cheapest option.
Though, perhaps simply funding improvements in Maritime Bus service to run in better coordination within the three main airports would be the simplest way forward. Investing in a better bus service between communities along the North Shore and YQM could also be a good idea.
So even if we don't see an Air Canada bus service like they have in Southern Ontario , I do think Air Canada, West Jet, and other airlines would want to be involved in improving bus service between NB's main airports. Airlines are always interested in ways they can be involved with solutions to lower the carbon footprint associated with air travel, and, of course, it's good for their business if more customers are better connecting to their airports.
Basically, I figure if we're never going to see a return of passenger trains outside of the very limited
VIA Ocean service in NB... we should at least be pushing for huge improvements in the intra-provincial bus system, which will ultimately be a benefit to the benefit to NB's airports and the airlines that operate out of them.
The federal government should also be looking at ways to better fund interprovincial bus travel... but that's a whole other discussion... as I'm sure NB's airport authorities might not be so happy if it becomes more convenient and more affordable to take a bus to Montreal or Halifax to catch a flight.

Regardless, it improving interprovincial bus services is exactly the type of nation building project that the Prime Minister is talking about which would quite literally help us get down the road towards creating, "
one Canadian economy", a file that Minister Leblanc is in charge of.
