YHU website says the terminal will be operational this year (most likely the end of the year). I wouldn't be surprised if that gets further delayed into 2026.

Even if it opens on time, I don't see PD or Pascan starting domestic flights in the dead of winter.

I think between Sunwing's meltdown in February (due to the back to back snowstorms, which surely affected other airlines as well) and the Cuban decline, that's ~100% of the international losses.

YYZ released Q1 2025 results.

Domestic: 3.4 million -2.2%
International: 7.3 million -1.9%

Total: 10.7 million -2.0%

https://www.torontopearson.com/en/corporate/media/press-releases/2025-05-06

So both YUL and YYZ are down -2.0% in Q1.
YYC is +0.4%
YVR is +1.8%

It's gonna be that kind of year, I think, in terms of passenger numbers.

Surprised YYZ is down so much in domestic. I guess YUL is stealing the connecting passengers?

With the increase so far in the first 3 months, YVR still on track to break all-time high in 2025 though. Will be interesting to see how much transborder reduction will be when heading into summer, and will it actually affect the domestic numbers.

The last of Lynx’ failure is in those Q1 numbers. We’ll see if that makes a difference for Q2.

AC reported a small $102M loss for Q1 2025: https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/ai...er-2025-financial-results-802763557.html

LF down 2.3 pts. So goes AC, largely so goes YYZ & YUL.

Sunwing will be offering two new YQB destinations, Montegao Bay and San Andres, starting this winter.

https://www.facebook.com/yqbaeroport?locale=fr_CA

At yesterday's annual meeting, the CEO pointed out that, unlike other Canadian airports, US traffic is on the rise, and it's the Americans who are increasingly coming to Quebec City.

He also confirmed that over 50% of YQB customers still use another airport (...YUL).....

Onex selling minority stakes in WestJet to Delta and Korean Air
By The Canadian Press
Updated: May 09, 2025 at 1:24PM EDT

Published: May 09, 2025 at 6:32AM EDT

Onex Corp. is selling minority stakes in WestJet to Delta Air Lines and Korean Air in a US$550-million deal that aims to position the Calgary-based airline for growth abroad amid intensifying domestic competition and plummeting demand for flights to the U.S.

Under the deals announced Friday, Delta will acquire a 15 per cent stake in WestJet for US$330 million, while Korean Air will buy a 10 per cent stake for US$220 million.

After the agreement closes, Delta plans to sell a 2.3 per cent stake in WestJet to its joint venture partner Air France-KLM for US$50 million.

Onex, a Toronto-based private equity firm chaired by Gerry Schwartz, made a long-coveted leap into aviation in 2019 by signing a friendly deal to buy WestJet in an all-cash transaction of $3.5 billion, or about $5 billion including debt....

Wonder if this means WS will announce its winter schedule soon too.

In addition to AC removing YOW/YQB-TQO, YUL-TQO is being reduced from 5x to 3x weekly. While the route is upgauging to a MAX, overall capacity is still down:

https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/250508-acnw25tqo

YYZ-TQO moves from Rouge (mix of 319/320/321 last winter) to the MAX and capacity is relatively flat.

TQO seems to have reverted to seasonal, not loaded from both YYZ/YUL for S25 unlike S24.

While there's a very slim chance this could visit YVR, Jetblue have introduced a special Dunkin Donuts livery: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/2...e-Runs-on-Dunkin-With-New-Special-Livery

I donut know what to think of this.

EDIT: Removed the image as it was gigantic - image is available in the link.

More transborder cuts:

- UA are shortening the season of their new summer seasonal YVR-EWR route: https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/250513-uans25ewryvr

- AC transborder reductions for Sep/Oct: https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/250513-acsep25us - no route cuts but some frequency cuts and/or aircraft down gauges and/or earlier end dates of some summer seasonal transborder routes.

It's not listed there, but UA also shortened YYC-IAD to just JUN26-AUG31, about a month shorter than planned.

WS also extended some of its US cuts into September, and further reduced YVR-LAS.

PD also further reduced YOW-BOS from 10x weekly to 1x daily, in alignment with the winter schedule. This route was originally planned to be 2x daily like last summer.

The Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) turns 75: Honouring the past, flying into the future

May 13, 2025 – Waterloo Region – The Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) is proud to celebrate its 75th anniversary. Since opening its doors in 1950, the airport has grown from a Regional airfield to a vital hub supporting economic development, tourism, trade and community growth by connecting Waterloo Region to the world.

To commemorate this historic milestone, YKF will host a 75th Anniversary Open House on Saturday, June 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This free event will showcase the recent expansion and allow residents to explore the air terminal building – no boarding pass required. Instead of admission, attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the Food Bank. We invite residents to join the YKF team, airline partners and support agencies to celebrate the past and set the stage for the future.

"From its humble beginnings to becoming a modern gateway to the world, the Region of Waterloo International Airport has played a key role in connecting people, businesses, and cultures for three-quarters of a century," said Karen Redman, Chair of the Region of Waterloo. "We are honoured to celebrate this anniversary with the community that has supported us every step of the way."

Over the last 75 years, the airport has achieved many milestones, including:
  • 1951 – Trans Canada Airlines (now Air Canada) launches service to Malton (now Toronto).
  • 1973 – First passenger air terminal building opens.
  • 1996 – The Regional Municipality of Waterloo assumes full ownership of the airport.
  • 2003 – The primary runway is extended to 7,000 feet, and a new terminal building opens.
  • 2005 – Sunwing Airlines launches seasonal air service to Mexico and the Caribbean.
  • 2007 – WestJet launches air service to Calgary, Alberta and beyond.
  • 2011 – Airport Operations Centre built to house operations, fleet maintenance and fire service.
  • 2021 – Flair Airlines launches air service to six Canadian destinations.
  • 2023 – Air terminal building expanded to meet increased passenger demand.
  • 2024 – Air Canada launches Landline luxury motorcoach service to Toronto.
Seventy-five years. One incredible journey. As the Region of Waterloo International Airport looks to the future, plans are underway to continue upgrades, green initiatives, and expand service to meet the evolving needs of our passengers and partners.

Part of it for Toronto is how many people connect to the USA from Toronto from other parts of Canada.
