The most outspoken Alberta Separatist I know lives in Swift Current and only goes to Alberta for vacation.

it's amazing to me that there are almost two million Albertans that don't live in the Calgary or Edmonton CMA's....where are they all?

Manitoba only has 550,000 people living outside of the Winnipeg CMA.

Looking at the (out of date) page on Wiki, a good chunk of them are in the second tier cities in Alberta. Lethbridge, Red Deer, Fort Mac, Medicine Hat, Airdrie, Grand Prairie. While not as well known as Calgary and Edmonton, many of them are fairly well known across Canada for various reasons. I'd say that would account for over 500k of those people.

Another big chunk are likely in communities just outside the Calgary/Edmonton CMAs but not sucked into them yet. (Places like Okotoks and Fort Saskatchewan for example).

Everyone else seems to just be rural Alberta basically.

I had no idea Calgary is at 1.8 million...that's crazy....twice the size of Winnipeg now...i remember when they were in the same category.

Winnipeg leaving Hamilton and even Quebec...they were all tied a few years ago....weird Hamilton isn't growing faster being so close to the GTA.

These population numbers are wild....that immigration spike was crazy....Vancouver over 3m.

I think for Hamilton, part of the problem is that it is practically hemmed-in by other CMAs. Toronto to the East. St. Catharines to the South. Guelph to the North. Brantford to the West. Thus making it difficult for it to expand its geographical catchment area.

I remember that when I lived in Alberta, Winnipeg was still the #4 metro in Canada, but Edmonton was catching up fast (Calgary didn't surpass Edmonton for quite some time...Calgary's metropolitan area became larger than Edmonton's in population sometime around 2001, AFAIK).

Hey Molson, I know you're a Prof and all, but St. Catharines/Niagara Region is definitely East of Hamilton

You get a pass because you live in Southwestern Ontario.

Beat me to it Wigs! South is actually the direction Hamilton could (and likely will) expand, but it's also the least desirable for a number of reasons. Proximity to the airport, far from the lakeshore transit / highway corridors and a further commute from the rest of the GTHA.

I'm going to sound like prairie boy here, but I drove from toronto to the states last summer and was amazed at how it was basically one continuous city between hamilton and toronto..there was a place on the highway where I could see both the hamilton and toronto skylines....i didnt realize they were so connected.

It seems like a mix of rural people who are like 3rd or 4th generation Albertans and some people new to the province. I have come across people new to Alberta that probably moved here for money, and now they're trying to find ways to get more of it.

I think the separatist fever happening is mostly in the media. There was a poll showing as high as 30% supporting separation but not clear on how many want more autonomy and how many people would really want to do it.

As with many things relating to Alberta the difference is with oil & gas With Sask and more so with Manitoba, the population outside of the larger cities is mostly agricultural, and Alberta would probably look similar without oil/gas, with towns only where there are farmable areas. Due to said oil and gas there are numerous towns in the 3,000- 10,000 range scattered over the province going quite far north.

That looks about right. Even smaller to medium cities above 15K, but outside of Cgy/Edm add up to almost 700K, and then a network of towns in the 3k-10k range that spread across the province. Plus of course people on farms acreages, etc..
