One thing I noticed about the site that stood out was the size of the construction "trailer". This thing is a 2 storey apartment style building. My coworker and I joked that it could be used as such once the Hospital is complete.

It looks like Synergy, the formwork company for Navy Lane is setting up here. I assumed they had a larger project in the area as mobilizing from Quebec just for Navy Lane seemed like a lot of effort.

Lunch rooms as well we are talking 1200-1500 construction workers onsite at any given time.

Hospitals are very technologically integrated and sophisticated. I am not at all surprised.

Free parking: People having nothing to do with hospitals will decide to park there, this will be terrible for patients and families.

I assume they will have a parking attendant to check people and the free parking ends at 2 pm ( according to a media report)

The new parking garage on Summer St is terrible and far inferior to the old one that was demolished on Robie. Despite being taller it seems to have far less capacity and getting to/from it to the hospital involves a strangely slanted overhead walkway that then requires multiple elevators to get you to the main floor to register. Just very poorly designed.

The first day, today, nobody seems to know if there is a system. Security, who usually look after parking say they have no information when asked.
There was to have been a second garage built on the old cbc site, but that lan went up in smoke.

I’ll echo that, and add that having entering traffic crossing through the lineup waiting to get out was very poorly conceived. Also the tight turn to get to the exit when coming down from upper levels has claimed many victims, as evidenced by the absolute plethora of paint marks on the concrete wall next to the exit machine.

I almost couldn’t believe that it is relatively new, given how horribly it flows.

Apparently staff are not able to park, although seemed to be a big selling point for the premier. On event days, like soccer, the gate will be up, and patients/families will have a hard time finding parking.

The reporting on this has not made clear what is causing the problem--is it that people are parking for free even though they're not hospital staff or patients/visitors? If that's what's causing the sudden surge in demand, why not just charge those users (or prohibit them altogether) and have some kind of free-parking validation system for staff/patients/visitors. It seems like this should be easy to implement.

What you propose is, I believe, what NS Health promised: that parkers would have to verify that they were there for legitimate reasons or they would pay double the current rates. The verification system may be inadequate or, perhaps more likely, people are parking there who previously would have parked elsewhere. For example, when I have to visit the Infirmary, I usually just park a couple of blocks away on Summer Street and pay with the HotSpot app. Except in bad weather, it's generally a lot less aggravating than prowling the parkade.

Just brought kid to IWK for an appointment this afternoon. There was a security guard at the gate to the parking garage. Pull up, roll down my window.

Her: "Hi, do you have an appointment this afternoon?"

Me: "Yup."

Her: "Okay, drive on through."

Yep, that'll keep the riffraff out...

Upon leaving the VG yesterday, the parking attendant told me that I had to have a parking validation from the clinic that we were attending, or we would have to pay for parking. The people at the clinic didn’t mention it, and I never thought to ask, but given that it was the first day, and not everyone is yet aware, she let us go, and gave us an information sheet so we will know how it works the next time around.

Seems like it should work, once everyone is on the same page, though I can imagine that this will be easily forgotten by both patient and clinic staff from time to time. Ideally, if they could have somebody handing out parking validation when you register, that would be best, so that the clinic people can concentrate on their actual jobs and not parking vouchers.

Most or all of the Atlantica Hotel across the street is apparently booked out by that project for trades and management travelling here to work. I also hear a rumour that they're looking into the possiblity of putting a cruise ship in the harbour for workers as things ramp up. (something simlar is happening in Squamish BC)
