Where those columns and that elevator shaft are going up in the background will be a 14 or so floor hotel.

And then a new apartment building is allegedly starting construction this year that we speculate will either be in the massive lot in from of the Richard B Russell federal building, or that lot on Mitchell in front of the old Southern Railway building.

God i hope/wish they would. I'm afraid grocers are put off by the area by the current lack of population density and the inevitable need for a lot of security to keep things chill. I hope Im wrong and CY has someone locked in and are waiting to announce it.

Very nice. Now that the initial disappointment of the downgrade in scope of this has worn off, the excitement of tangible progress is starting to ramp up. Just hope they start breaking ground on some more apartments ASAP. We need people living here not just tourist attractions.

To anyone who is interested. I just watched a clip of an interview on instagram between Tim Write and Brian McGowan of CIM. Brian mentions that the Mitchell boutique hotel will be 180 rooms and permitting is ready so they'll be breaking ground in the coming months. Also talks about the new apartment that we have all been speculating about. It is the spot there on Mitchell street in front of the Southern Rail building. He also said its going to be 230 rooms with 5000 sqft of retail and they are "pushing" to break ground on that this year.

A couple of more notes of interest from the full interview...

They are selling 99 Ted Turner building to a boutique hotel operator based in NY
CIM will own and operate the Phoenix hotel
They are in negotiations with the owner/operator of the hotel in the entertainment district.
They would start tomorrow if someone wants to lease at least half of the office space in the SOM-designed office building.
The operator of the 5,300 seat music venue will be announced soon which he described as the "crown jewel" of their theaters in the US.
They are hoping to open Cosm by the World Cup along with the building shells for the rest of the entertainment district. The pedestrian plaza will be open and activated.
There is "extraordinary" interest in the retail space.

The music venue is super exciting. 5000 seats is a really great venue size. You can get great acts, but actually have amazing atmosphere and acoustics. I personally don't like seeing shows in big arenas. Paid $200 to see metallica at the benz a few years back and was quite let down by the experience.

As for the office, I don't think they will get much traction unfortunately until the area is more desirable. I think if they build some real apartment volume here, get the retail experience open and thriving, that it will drive desire for office in the area. Until then hotter markets like midtown, west midtown and the east side beltline will continue to dominate.

I didn't know about the music venue. That is an ideal size for attracting quality acts while offering excellent acoustics. Looking forward to hearing more about it!

Fox Theater needs some competition. The Fox has around 4600 seats and this venue will have around 5300 seats so it's good for Downtown to have another venue to bring people Downtown. With Cosm which would probably have around 2000 seats across the street from State Farm Arena and The Benz and GWCC there should always be foot traffic in Downtown Atlanta.

I completely forgot about the Fox. I was thinking that this new venue will fit a niche that currently does not exist in Atlanta. But I imagine that this will be a lot more concert focused than the Fox.

Atlanta will have the best sport venues in the country hands down. What other city in the country has live, work, and play districts for all 3 major sport teams like Atlanta will have?

Maybe New Orleans even though the French Quarter is a few blocks from the Superdome

Yeah. Downtown might takeover Buckhead and Midtown in restaurants if this these developments turn out correctly

Instead of going to the Beltline people will want to walk around Downtown for entertainment etc

I believe once The Gulch is fully built out and if any other projects comes to fruition like 'The Center' and Convention Center entertainment plans, Downtown will definitely be The Destination. I think the Beltline will still be a big draw for locals, but that whole area in Downtown from the park to the Gulch will be a huge tourist trap.

With a loft on hotel row, I can only hope...
