Agree to disagree. Time Square Tower (at 7 Times Square) is way more attractive than this abomination.

This is a very polarizing tower some people love it some people hate it.. I'm just waiting for more detailed renderings when this thing starts rising above ground

this is a mullet of a building.

business on the bottom party on the top.

its great — the ts area needs something vegas-ish like this.

the bank loan people needn’t worry it will be very popular.

This building will certainly be popular, from both the attraction and observation deck points of view. Other developers will take note.

TEI Group Awarded Major 30-Unit Contract at The Torch

Apr 18, 2025

Quote:
NYC-headquartered TEI Group announced on April 17 it has been awarded a major 30-unit contract at The Torch, a supertall hotel skyscraper also known as 740 Eighth Avenue that will rise 1,067 ft above Times Square in Midtown Manhattan.

TEI Group said it is “honored to collaborate on this massive landmark,” designed by ODA Architecture and developed by Extell Development Co. The under-construction 56-story building will feature a 500-ft spiraling glass structure at the top inspired by the Statue of Liberty, as well as lower-level retail, a restaurant on the top two floors, a VIP lounge, a 260-ft drop ride and an observation deck. The US$1.3-billion tower will be served by 28 elevators, three of which travel more than 900 ft at over 2,000 ft/min; and two escalators.

TEI President Mark Gregorio observed The Torch is a continuation of an already-strong relationship with Extell and general contractor Suffolk Construction. He said the high-rise, high-speed elevator expertise of Vice President John Rose and General Manager Mike Donohue, as well as engineering support from Nidec Elevator Group, help position the project for success.

Not the greatest pics, but the site looked in full motion today. At least 20+ workers in and around the site. Crane was in use

The amount of unique corner and end conditions on that facade is insane. I wonder what the cost came to for just the curtain wall.

There are many elements in the renderings that don't appear to be accurate. What is this glass expanse here without any structure? Is this a 40+ linear feet of curved glass? And concerning all the other elements that are clear - the detailing to get this built nicely is going to be a Herculean task. It's very very messy architecture and geometries.

Where is the structure in the renderings of the crown? What is holding up all this glass? This will not look like it is rendered.

Good. With financing and a hotel operator now in place, this should rise relatively quickly.

That's not glass -- the renderings we have right now were photographed from a book or pamphlet of some sort, and that line is the shadow of the centre crease of that page spread. That area is meant to be open-air, which can be better seen on the left here:

Wow it’s also gonna feature a 260 ft drop? Yeah this will definitely be a landmark and tourist trap. Times Square could definitely use something like this.

There’s a very good chance it will be just down the street from a new Caesaers Times Square casino.

Have to agree. These renders are making this look taller and more sleek/futuristic than it will actually look. Hopefully it turns out well, but I don’t think nyc has a great track record with buildings this out of the ordinary. More times than not, we see the more untraditional looking buildings get value engineered down in terms of form/asthetics.

Don’t get me wrong, nyc has some great architecture. However, a design like this might need more of a Dubai mentality to make it work, where building a status symbol is as much of a driving force as the money developers expect to generate

The thing with Dubai is that land is +/- 3x cheaper and labor is +/- 5x cheaper than NYC... That's a huge difference and why buildings are built economically in the USA.

Jeezes people, this thing isn’t even above street level yet, and somehow we have “educated” opinions on the quality. I know everyone has and is entitled to opinions, but let’s get something to look at first. Otherwise, you’re just talking out of your you know what. And no one cares about Dubai, plenty of threads to discuss that.

100% agree.

This design is pretty out there. I feel like it’s going to take some serious money and commitment to get it right. It could be a real eyesore if they value engineer this thing to make it economically viable.

Hope I’m wrong though. It might look pretty cool if done right

Everyone is talking out of their you know what’s during construction. Speculating on the final product shouldn’t be surprising, especially on such an unusual building.

You don’t have to take small critiques of nyc towers so personally. Sheesh…
