Half of the footprint is going vertical, and it appears the other half is still digging for parking, tunnels, etc.

It looks like half the footprint of the new tower is still a hole in the ground, but I wouldn't be surprised if this thing opens ahead of schedule

It's likely going to be finished from the outside WAY before opening. A hospital is so much more complex to open than anything else between staffing, outfitting, HVAC, utilities, and approvals. Penn's Pavilion exterior was finished for a little over a year before it was open iirc, so if CHOP's target date is 2028, the building exterior itself could be built out by end of 2026/early 2027 and still only open on time. Even for only being part of the footprint, the steel is really flying on this

CHOP will borrow $750 million for $2.59 billion patient tower, $480 million research center

Quote:
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia plans to borrow $750 million to help pay for a long-planned $2.59 billion patient tower and a $480 million research facility under construction on the nonprofit’s Schuylkill Avenue campus, according to bond offering statements issued last week.

The new patient tower will have 200 private patient rooms and 12 operating rooms when it opens in 2028. In planning at least since 2020, the building will have the capacity to add an additional 300 beds and another 15 operating rooms, the bond statement said.

Basically, yeah. There was a ton of stuff they had to do underground in terms of parking, tunnels, and lots of utilities that are more specialized than the average building. Should be moving vertical faster now

Hospitals are far more complex than most buildings, and as mentioned, there was a ton of underground work to do removing the foundations of the old building. Not surprising. Excited to see this when it’s done though.

Comcast's Roberts family gifts CHOP largest-ever donation in hospital's history

The $125 million donation will be used to create the Roberts Children's Health building and will also be used to revitalize the West Philadelphia-based hospital

CHOP announced that the $125 million donation will mean a brand new building called Roberts Children's Health that will open in 2028. The money will also help with the revitalization of the hospital located on Civic Center Boulevard.

The new Roberts Children's Health building is expected to be over 20 stories high and have more than 30 procedure and imaging rooms for patients.

This is great and needed, but I always wondered why billionaires couldn't do this for parks, ped bridges, bike lanes etc. It would have a huge impact on the city in such a positive way. Imagine what 125m could do or jumpstart.

https://www.chop.edu/giving/roberts-childrens-health

There is a video starting at 4:00 with a new video render, including the street level, and some interior render images. There's more depth to the massing than I initially thought. Interestingly this also shows the demolition of the Seashore House for a small park. There's too much traffic for that to be a nice place to spend time, but probably desired just for the landscaping and aesthetic. I don't think they'll build there unless they have to to not block the new patient windows, unless they build something short or expand the new hospital's ground floor eventually. EDIT: Looking a bit more closely, it looks like a future service road and parking ramp are also going in the Seashore House footprint

There's also a construction cam here: https://www.chop.edu/centers-programs/facilities-department/watch-npt-progress and is up to the 9th floor I think

Some quick screenshots:
