That is interesting that the demand is larger than projected. I was kind of hesitant because I thought the football success was the main driver. But it's looking like the scholarships and campus atmosphere is a stronger aspect of this. I am at the "believe it until I see it" though when it comes to the final numbers we get in September to see if they actually increased admission requirements, but I have heard similar things that you have. Wish this was like election night and we got to see numbers in real time.

The problem is NOT at the top, 25th percentile, but at the bottom, 75th percentile. UA is enrolling more top students that most state flagships. But it is still enrolling way too many lower tier students to even maintain its place in the USNWR rankings.

I have seen nothing in the news about UA pausing admissions. I hope what Packer is saying will happen is true. Does anyone have a link to a source for this claim?

I doubt something like that would be in the news and is more word of mouth than anything. Schools usually don't know that far in advance on what kind of demand they will be in from year to year. I do believe though that it is happening based on the r/capstone reddit page. You will be happy to hear that one person was talking about not getting into UA and instead was offered the Shelton State CC Bridge program

Let your voice be heard for the new UA president

https://uasystem.edu/ua-presidential-search

Below is the important part of the link:

Listening Sessions
The UA Presidential Search Advisory Committee will hold listening sessions for campus community members and supporters to share feedback and comments on characteristics, qualifications and credentials they believe are essential for the next president of The University of Alabama.

The committee will host listening sessions focused on faculty, staff, students, alumni and the local community. In addition, the committee will hold a session open to all UA community members and supporters.

The one-hour listening sessions will be conducted via Zoom, with a maximum capacity of 1,000 attendees per session due to licensing restrictions. Participants must register to reserve a spot and receive the meeting credentials.

The listening session schedule is as follows:

Alumni: Wednesday, Jan. 29, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. CST

Thanks for sharing that. Would you please share that Reddit address? I am intrigued. And thanks for sharing the link to the Search Committee. Also, I have nominated Dr. Chuck Karr, the current UAH president. UA Engineering enrolled more students and more top students than ever before and ever since.

Google reddit and then go into the site and type r/capstone in the search field and it will show up. Be careful though, there is a ton of — in reddit

Just talked to an administrator in admissions. She told me that they are admitting on a weekly basis. She said they are having a lot of conversations on who to admit. (I'm guessing the cream of the crop is getting admitted, plus, some "who you know" admissions). But, no new criteria has yet been decided. Next week is the Spring "Free" application week and is geared more toward in-state students. Applications will be accepted until May 1st, but, probably are going to progressively get more selective as we approach the deadline date. RTR

This is pretty cool. "any current UA student or student from a school in the Southeastern Conference participated in this ritual honoring U.S. military members who have made the ultimate sacrifice."

I know in the grand scheme of things that this isn't a big deal but this just goes to what I've been saying over the years that we (UA grads) don't take care of our own. This is like AU hiring a UA grad to be president of the Auburn research campus in Huntsville. Ok, not that far but still it pisses me off

The University of Alabama was the only college in the SEC to have 4 students selected as Goldwater Scholars this year. As for the state of Alabama, three Universities had students receiving the award, The Univeristy of Alabama (4), the University of South Alabama (3), and UAB (2). Congrats to all the scholars. RTR

Very cool! I'm very happy the University is doing more for veterans. And, veteran students honoring those who died for this country is heart-warming. RTR

I agree. But, some Auburn grads love the University of Alabama. A case in point, I have a friend who's son went to Auburn. He would come to our BAMA tailgates. I asked him why he went to Auburn and he said that his two best friends went there and he followed them, but, he still loves UA. He did say he was coming to UA for grad school. I told him, with a Philosophy degree, that he had better go to grad school. Also, I told him I forgave him.

Very few Auburn grads love UA, hahahaha. That is a problem that I'm seeing too much of is that UA legacies are going to AU because all their friends are going there. That is a problem that needs to be fixed and I believe it is slowly getting fixed. I would prefer it to be the other way around and make the AU legacies see all their friends going to UA and their parents having to write a check to UA.

"Auburn University Police have responded to more than 900 reports of criminal incidents and violations so far in 2024, according to the school’s crime log.

University of Alabama campus police and law enforcement have responded to about 80 incidents so far in 2024, according to that school’s log."

Yet UA is ranked way below Auburn in "Campus safety". Yet another ranking that just doesn't make sense. I googled both Auburn and Bama's crime log. From August 1 to today Auburn had 150 crime reports. Bama had 80. See links below

https://www.auburn.edu/administration/campus-safety/reports/crime/index.php?_offset=0&

This is why I said earlier that I feel UA is safer to send my kids to than AU
Another link that shows how dangerous it is in Auburn. Protect your women in your life

Dating violence: Violence towards somebody who is in a social, intimate, or romantic relationship with the victim.
Domestic violence: Violence committed by a current or former spouse or partner of the victim. As well as a person sharing a child with the victim, current or previous cohabitation as a spouse or partner.
Stalking: Actions directed at a specific person that causes the victim to fear their safety and cause emotional distress.
In light of recent events at Rice University regarding the murder-suicide of Andrea Rodriguez Avila, if you know somebody in a relationship and may be in danger of domestic violence, please call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), to report it. For immediate assistance, call 911 to report domestic violence to local authorities."

In state parents know which school has the higher standards and that leads to the perception within Alabama that Auburn is the "more serious" academic program. UA can change that with ease and within a couple of years the reputation differential would change. UA exceeds AU in every factor EXCEPT academic rep. Well maybe some students prefer AU for being in a smaller town.

I think the perception that Auburn is safer is due to Auburn city having a much lower crime rate than that of Tuscaloosa.
