If "Crandall" moved away from being a "bible" college and moved more to a truly academic university, much like St. Thomas has...we could have a small English University...however I don't seeing it happen.

Honestly having an English undergraduate university in the GMA is over due with the population base approaching what it is.

It also doesn't need to be tied to UNB (which likely would never happen anyway).

STU is the model I see for Moncton at this stage.

If Crandall decided to join the fold of publicly funded universities in the Maritimes and received MPHEC certification, I would be cool with that. The campus however would need to be expanded (science building mandatory) and program expansion would have to occur.

I don't see this happening though. Crandall has Baptist sensibilities towards homosexuality and conjugal relationships outside of marriage which would have to be abandoned in order to receive provincial funding, and I don't see this ever happening (unless the university were on the financial precipice and there was no other option available).

1000% and that's why I said I don't think it's a viable option, completely agree.

The small, STU type, English undergraduate university is the model we need for the city. IMHO.

What about something outside the box. Beal University from Maine has recently created a presence in Sackville, with their nursing program. I'm not talking about that exact iteration, just the concept of another university with a branch/campus in Moncton. Could one of the N.S. universities (or elsewhere) be persuaded to expand into Moncton - starting with the basics, and expanding as time goes on. Wouldn't that be better than starting from scratch with a brand new unaffiliated institution?

If so, what would have to happen in order for something like this to occur? I know the catalyst for Beal University coming to N.B. was Opportunities New Brunswick approaching them.

The options are:

1) - UNB Moncton campus.
2) - MTA urban campus
3) - a politically reformed Crandall University renouncing it's fundamentalist values.

Nothing else really works well. I agree with Photo1, whichever option is chosen, we should look at a small undergraduate university with basic course offerings in Arts, Science, Business Administration, Education and potentially Nursing to begin with. Perhaps over time other programs could be added, but, we should start small and have goals that are easily achievable.

I doubt anything like that will happen in the near future. From what I can see most universities seem to be in contraction/survival mode at the moment. Years of underfunding on the part of the provinces combined with being blindsided by federal cuts to foreign students have left them facing serious financial challenges

Oh, I realize this, and, the current tariff war with the US will complicate things even more as the provincial government goes hundreds of millions of dollars deeper in debt.

Still, at some point in time, it's gotta happen. Moncton is close to a CMA population of 200k. At what point in time will the absence of a public anglophone university in the city become an embarrassment to the province, 250k, 300k???

I will likely not live to see it (unless Crandall becomes a public university), but, sometime in the next 50 years, there will be a public anglophone university in Moncton.

Crandall University going the public route would mean that they would have to abandon their beliefs and core values (as stated above), this would be worse than UdeM going bilingual, instead of assimilation, this would be an erasure of a institution for a specific demographic. That would be worse, why should that option even be considered. MTA, UNB or another university would be more likely.

Two public hearings with objections and what appears to be the introduction of the four-unit zoning changes. Also, private items. Looks like a ~3+ hour meeting.

Mentioning 19 floors sounds like a specific proposal that's in the pipeline. Likely Ashford. Knowing what the timeline is for the city to finish the infrastructure work is the big question. It determines when Ashford will start their work. The fact that they didn't start the 2nd Lorentz building is telling. Gearing up for the downtown "doozy".

Thank you KnoxfordGuy for taking archive and sharing photos of the old lone bridge pillar. Its defiantly an interesting piece of Moncton history in the flesh. Ive been living in NB for 15 years but I have only been in Moncton for the last two years and I love our growing and ever evolving city. KnoxfordGuy, you inspired me to create this time lapse of the Moncton section of the Petitcodiac River with aerial images obtained from Open Moncton. Its fascinating to see how wide the river was all those years ago. I hope in the coming years the river will form back into is former glory. • Video Link

It is changing around Upper Coverdale too. Where my bosses live they have 32 acres and in the last 5 months a stream feeding off the river has eroded in enough that now the lower meadow (about 40 percent of the 32 acres) on their property that they leave natural for the wildlife is now covered in water. It used to come and go with the tides but now is mostly staying. There are currently ducks swimming there.

Whenever I see these or new aerials come out from one of the mapping services, I always go straight to Chateau Moncton. In 2004, the river was -maybe- a third wider than the length of the building. Now it's nearly 3x.

I didn't realize there was still such a shortage of construction workers in the province. An interesting story from CTV regarding a recent one day summit held in Dieppe where construction industry leaders, government officials and employment experts discussed the issue of labour shortages in the construction industry. Immigration was mentioned as one solution.

“We have a massive housing shortage. There’s building construction going on to meet that need and we need people to fill the roles on the job site,” said Clinch. “It’s not just a one-year problem. The forecast is for this to be continuing for the next 10 years in our country and in particular our region.”
