Does anyone recall how many gantry cranes were used for the Millennium Line construction? I have two in my head but have zero confidence in that.

These files are from the gantry launcher crane manufacturer in Italy. They also supplied the guideway moulds.

Seems like one for Canada Line.

Two for the Millennium Line (and refurbished for Evergreen)

Quote:
The Evergreen Line is the extension in East Vancouver of the Millennium Line, which was constructed in the late 1990s, also using Deal equipment. The overall extension involved a length of tunnel, various at-grade sections and also about 3.5km of elevated guideway, which was built using precast segmental-by-span erection method was not new to British Columbia, as two other elevated light rail systems had already been built with the same technology. For the Evergreen Line Project, existing casting machines that had been previously supplied by Deal were adapted and retrofitted to work on the new extension. Reusing the equipment eliminated the need for major investment, which was a particular benefit as the project’s elevated section was in itself not very long. Deal carried out the retrofit of the equipment and successfully reused the same casting machines without any impact on productivity or the quality of the segments.

The erection was carried out using a self-launching overhead span-by-span truss, which was of a ‘hinged’ type in order to accommodate the alignment’s tight radius of curvature. This equipment had also been used previously on another section of elevated rail line in Vancouver and was adapted for the new project.

With those gantry cranes around, you'd think they could also build the short Port Coquitlam spur along the railway tracks.

i doubt they have any money for that. this project is what, $2 billion - $3 billion over budget?

also, wouldnt that mean that the Millennium-Line ends up needing to terminate at 3 different locations? so it would cut down service to all the destinations going east.

Current Skytrain lines. Added the PoCo spur means it would split after Coquitlam Central.

I was thinking that the PoCo spur could start with one station to Lions Park/Shaughnessy.

They could just run a shuttle service back and forth without affecting the rest of the line

I think it's pretty expensive to get together all of the people, equipment and other resources just to build one station. Better to aim for a budget that lets you amortize those project start-up and wind-up costs over as many stations as you can.

How cool to see!

We officially have two Skytrain projects occurring at the same time.

Thanks!

Here are some photos form the Province:

Question: does anyone know the address for "Precast concrete facility construction"? I'd like to visit it and take some photos myself

Precast concrete facility construction

Foundation formwork in place for pouring the foundations to support a future rail mechanism. The mechanism will help move guideway segments to the storage area.

Crews assembling one of the molds at the precast concrete facility. There will be 21 molds in total at the facility, which will be used to cast more than 4000 guideway segments.

195 St & 24 Ave, 195 doesn’t show up on Google Maps but I assume it’s across 24 Ave from the Walmart distribution centre.

Why don't we have a central pre-fab plant that is permanent for Skytreain, over pass segments, etc that all use the same technology. Could even be a profit center for otherAlberta and Washinton state to use.

I doubt there's enough work to even bother with having a plant just dedicated to making guideway segments/transport costs would outweigh the costs for a temporary plant.
