I saw some pictures online on the Marriott Website and something that says opening April 22nd.

Does anyone have recent pictures of the lobby/street level? Does it look complete and inviting?

They applied for a liquor licence for an "Outdoor space". I wonder if they plan to put a patio here.

If this becomes public access, it will be overwhelmed with drug addicts and homeless. I'm pretty sure this area will have restricted access in some form.

The area on the right is planned to be a patio linked to the hotel restaurant inside. That should do a good job of activating this area and deterring undesirable activities.

If it is a publicly accessible space, I don't think that locking down one end would be the way to go. It wouldn't keep certain people out (if that's your goal) but it would make it less useful to the general public. As a pass through it will see people using it, and you are going to want as much foot traffic in the area as possible.

I could see a patio working nicely here despite the nearby shelter and its associated issues.

That cinderblock wall is crying for a mural. I feel like a bright mural, healthy trees/shrubs and an active patio could serve to deter anti social behavior.

Not directly comparable but the William st pedestrian mall doesn't usually have anything more going on than somebody sipping on a beer and panning. I don't really have an issue with either of those things if you can manage to behave yourself which is usually the case on William st.

Having an additional couple towers built directly around this since it was last shuttered should help with general positive activity.

I'm not seeing this be a problem space TBH.

Just paint that dang mural! We have so many in this city it wouldn't make sense not too. It's a perfect canvas.

One recalls that it was the foot traffic that got it locked down in the first place. I suppose they'll have to try it and see what happens.

That is good to hear. I'm really stoked to see this passage open again and I hope it spurs some other areas in the market to embrace pedestrianization.

As someone who just blew all their savings and went to Europe 3 times in the last 18 months I can honestly say the Byward Market friggin 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 🞵🞵🞵🞵 cheeks. Truly an awful place in the grand scheme. Or at least.. a fraction of what it could be.

Just get rid of the god darned cars around market square and York st. man. PLEASE.

At least give me a continuous pedestrian space along William to York and then up the steps to Majors Hill Park and Nepeans Point. PLEASE. I beg thee. We can do this I swear.

Never mind Europe. US cities and not Just New York-Los Angela -Washington DC but places like Cleveland have great pedestrian areas that are booming.

Now I think we are going a little overboard in our criticism of Ottawa. Cleveland has a pedestrian street that is one block long in what is quite possibly the most car-dependent city in North America. It is in no way better than the Market.

I know we are rough on Ottawa but this city really does have a ton of upside. I was giving my Lithuanian pal a tour of all the Bank st. Murals via streetview. She's dying to come here and scoffs whenever I put Ottawa down. I've done so many walk around live streams for her as well. She really wants to see Hogsback and Rideau Falls. It's easy to be hard on your own town when you see it for its faults. Nothing wrong with pushing for improvement.

Ottawa does a poor job of propping up its strengths. The path along Col. By side of the canal is great example. UNESCO world heritage site and it is a mess. That path and along the Rideau river need to be expanded to have both walking and cycling paths. This 3 meter wide stuff from 50 years ago needs to go.

That being said.. Woot for Ottawa murals. I feel like that is one thing we really excel in. I'm not sure I have visited any other city that has such a good representation. Then again.. You kind of have to look for them so maybe my sample size isn't accurate. Bank st. are all on the crossroads and alleys etc. Even on Gladstone by Bank, there are some nice ones but they are behind the street facing buildings.

I dig it though. Makes for good wandering.

*edit.. for the love of god can we please dust Buffalo.
