I thought the glass box was going to be retail; it's pretty big.

For future development on the Carter site, would they tie the development into the Skytrain station, the same way they have done with the BTC side? ie being able to cross lougheed without having to go to street level.

I think the idea is a grand staircase/escalator bank traveling south into a future development.

Note they were running four car trains today. Normally the two car trains stop farther away from the new escalators.

So I travelled to Brentwood Town Centre yesterday. I intentionally used the new down escalator; I was the only one to do so (and the escalator itself was stopped lol, so had to walk down anyway).

Unlike the four car train pictured above, the two car trains stop quite far from the new escalators. I wonder if it would make sense to make the new escalators run up to the platform, and have the original escalators run down? Sure this would require changing all their new signage, but on the other hand they changed the entire direction of the platform at Lougheed Town Centre a few years after it opened.

I thought the same when I was there.

But I guess it's really for when Broadway Subway opens, and the whole Millennium Line goes to 4-cars trains?

You assume once the Mark V start on the expo line you'll see more 4 car trainsets on the Millenium line?

I was thinking that Marks V to replace Marks I, and once Broadway extension opens - then all trains 🚆 should be 4 cars minimum, since by then all Marks I should be retired.

If I recall correctly, we're getting 41 Mark V trains (205 cars) as part of the Mark I retirement, which more than replaces the existing 150 Mark I cars. I expect we'll see all the Mark II vehicles (both the 2001 and 2009 models) move to the Millennium Line and operate in 4-car configurations to provide added service along the Broadway extension.

There are 7 more Mark V trains on order as part of the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain project, and then options for additional trains beyond that to handle replacement of the Mark II series starting in the 2030s.

In the meantime I wonder if they can adjust where the two car trains stop? I.E. have the two car trains stop between the new escalators and the elevators, rather than having the west end of the trains stop well beyond the elevators as they do now.

A year or so back, one of TransLink's reports suggested that some trains on the Expo Line would continue on from Production Way to Arbutus. If that is the case, we might see the Mark V trains along Broadway as well.

That was a further future plan, when the Millennium Line needs additional capacity between Arbutus and Lougheed. Not saying it won't happen, but I'm not expecting to see it in the first few years of the Broadway extension.

They also need to do platform extension work at the Millennium Line stations before a Mark V could run revenue service there.

wait, what? did they really build a SkyTrain line in the late 90s/early 00s without the ability to run slightly longer trains than the 6-car Mark I? if so, our lack of long term transportation planning strikes again.

I don't think they typically ran 6-car MK1 trains until the Evergreen Line opened (2016). They were still typically running 4-car but had expansion capacity for 6-car trains. Sounds like long term planning to me.

They're still running 2 car pairs so I mean it was good enough for three decades. Aren't all the Broadway Lines also ~80m?

i feel like they should have planned for 5 car Mark II trains, which should be equal to 5-car Mark V trains.

though i dont know the platform lengths for the millennium-line. it seems weird to me they wouldnt be long enough for the Mark V trainsets. i certainly hope they are.

needing to do major station platform upgrades after only 30yrs isnt long term planning when the system is meant to last 100yrs. there is no way theyd have planned for always runnin 2, or 4 car trains. it was always meant to go from UBC - Coquitlam. from the 3rd largest employment centre, through the 2nd largest employment centre, connecting to the Expo-line, going through burnaby. if they didnt plan for longer trains, thats just ridiculous.

yes, the broadway subway platforms are 82.5m long. enough for a 5-car Mark V train. though i think they should have done 100m.

Standard platform length for both Expo line and Millennium line is 80m.
Original Expo line centre platform stations have tracks split far enough away to extend platforms to 100m.

Drove past Stadium Station today and only just noticed that the curved vaulted skylights have been replaced with angled and peaked skylights.
Curved awning along the front entrance was also replaced with an angular one.

Google shows old ones January 2022:

I'd still suggest that - if needed - longer trains could service existing platforms by simply not opening doors at the far ends of the train. It would mean a slightly longer interior walk for some passengers, but with proper signage people would quickly adapt.

Probably a hazard in an emergency - if somebody gets injured on the stampede out, everybody points fingers at TransLink.
