I have seen some trucks and guys in hi-viz vests around that lot recently. Tiny signs of life.

Is there a plan to do anything with the lot next door, where they tore down the attached smaller building?

It's really a shame to see how quickly Winnipeg rose in the early 1900s, with all the beautiful Chicago architecture, and then just suddenly stall. I always dream what Winnipeg's downtown would look like if it continued to rise at the same rate as Vancouver or Montreal.

^ the building we really missed out on was the original late 1920's Richardson building that started but stalled out during the depression and then cancelled.

That would have given us a signature Art Deco tower, which is one type of building we don't have, unlike many other peer cities of that time.

Anyone know what happened to that 4-storey building on the west side of the Boyd?

Didn't the current owners tear it down intending to make it a parking lot for the Boyd? I think there was some issue with the lot access being only from the lane at the back?

Seeing the original drawings make me very sad and make me think of how defining it would have been to see it built like that instead of what's there right now.

Even if we had 4 or 5 buildings like 259 Portage spread across Portage would make all the difference :')

No, they tore down that smaller building directly beside the Boyd. That 4-storey building was an empty lot prior to redevelopment on the Boyd starting.

You can check the older dates of google street view to see.

You're right, thanks!

I'll always remember the Boyd from childhood trips to out family doctor, who had his office there. Weird calendar pictures of bug people on his walls. Pretty spooky place for a young kid!

Pretty sure it burned down.

I really hope the Boyd restoration happens. It’s such a beautiful building and drives me insane that the shadowy Caspian group owns it and is letting it rot.

This. Does that group still own it?…because if they do, I’m not expecting much of anything to happen other than getting workers on site to meet a government grant application requirement.

Nice image in the WFP this morning of downtown west side construction.

Looks good! Gonna be an interesting community when its filled up. If lived there I'd be petitioning to pedestrianize the sections of Good street and Colony between Portage and St. Mary.

Side note: I'd love to see that lot on the corner of Cooper and Osborne developed. The Sussex realty building looks so dusty and awkward on its own.

LOL. Today I learned that there is a 'Cooper Avenue' in Winnipeg.

Any word on what is happening at the Holiday Inn at Portage/Colony?
The restaurant seems to be gutted, with work going on, and the rooms seem to be dark.

From what has been posted on Instagram and Facebook it looks like a major refresh of the building.

I did not see any reopening date on either site so they probably want some wiggle room before they accept new guest reservations.
