Non-local here, why are closing it and why will it hurt downtown Regina?

https://www.regina.ca/transportation...ect/index.html

Major project to fix ancient utilities which requires ripping up a lot of stuff. Also fixing road / sidewalks. Rather than doing it all at once they broke it into sections. Most of the bus routes meet along that stretch.

It's an infrastructure re-build that is taking many years with complete closure of arguably the most important street in downtown. People already complain about parking and traffic flow downtown and many avoid coming downtown. This also hurts businesses whose access is directly impacted.

Not surprising to see more density going there.

ETA: My mistake on location. Still not surprised to see more density there.

Freezing mist last night so I didn't go over to the Albert Street Bridge demo because I didn't need the drone icing up and crashing. I went this morning and work hadn't started for the day yet, maybe another hour for them to warm up the machines and get started.

Took a 22 minute video this morning, they were just processing rubble so I'll recharge and go over in the afternoon to see if they are knocking down more.

Thanks for posting those. Looks like they have some good operators in the hoes. Does anyone here know who's doing the demolition?

Zooming in on one of the stills I took one of the machines is labeled Anderson Demolition and Construction, they are out of Winnipeg.

I would note that this is less than $160K per door construction costs. This does not include land. Remind we why we are building taxpayer-funded "affordable" housing for $400K+ per door? Our politicians just keep falling for these unstainable "solutions".

The developer did say the project would be $40-45 million so there may be further permits for things like paving and landscaping. They paid $2.1 million for the land. Even at $45 million there are only at $215K per door.

Mortise + Tenon are moving into their new location on 13th Avenue - the old Gale's Florist Building. Apparently there are three other tenants moving in too - anyone have an idea as to who?
In any case- great to see the building get some new life.

In Regina - yes.
Only one on 13th though. Their previous 13th Ave location was temporary while their new location was being renovated.

Anecdotally there seems to be far fewer road work tenders issued for this year. Maybe Dewdney and 11th Ave are sucking up all the cash. There's also a the east water storage / pipeline, and a big sewage trunk to south Regina ongoing. Or even all the extra cash they have to dump into REAL messing up the budget.

So is Regina getting a second Costco or what? Is anything happening on that front at all?

There is a thread on reddit from 2 months ago where a Costco employee said there were rumours at the east store that head office didn't like the Westerra location. Also mentioned an alternate location of 9th Ave N at the bypass was suggested.

I don't know if the city ever got around to commissioning a design to getting into Coopertown near there, after the province said they couldn't have a full intersection at 9th / Pinkie. Fairway Road is probably the only option, they'd have to design and build an intersection to accommodate future twinning. That alone would probably take 2 years to make happen likely ruling out that location unless a second location isn't urgent.

I have heard they are considering a site on the West side of the bypass closer to the transportation hub because it gives better access to the bypass than the Westerra side.

Second bridge span demolition started tonight. https://imgur.com/a/north-albert-str...hase-1-OIT5VnC

From the controller the video looked dark so I stopped recording. But what I did record was ok. Trickier spotting hazards flying at night. I knew there was a set of power lines around there I needed to avoid.

They were busy during the night. Downloading 25GB of video from the drone which will take a while to edit, render and upload to youtube.

Videos from this morning.

I still have no freakin' idea what the designers of the bypass were thinking when it was built without direct access to Dewdney coming from the south. It was idiotic then and it's even more idiotic now. That decision will haunt Westerra forever.
