^ very cool thanks for posting.

Kinda wild that they break the ships right there at the very mouth of the southern end of the welland canal, where all Lakers transiting between Erie and Ontario have to pass directly by.

Hey, that's Port Colborne! cheers from Niagara Region

Ye Olde map

The ship junkyard is pretty close to HH Knoll Lakeview Park

Tom,
TVO aka TV Ontario is an amazing public resource with so much good, educational content. As far as I know we're the only Province that has its own public TV station.

TVO is like a very good PBS station. CBC is more modelled on BBC.

Between TVO, CBC and WNED TV in Buffalo (which advertises itself as Buffalo-Toronto now), there's a lot of good public broadcasting available in southern Ontario.

Radio from Buffalo hasn't really caught on across the border, but I must say WNED FM is MUCH better for classical music than the dreadful commercial Classical FM in Toronto.

Agreed on all points. While I haven't listened in a while, my grandfather weaned me on WNED classical music. WNED FM host Stratton Rawson has more classical musical knowledge than probably most in the whole Buffalo - Toronto binational media market mega region. He looks like he should be a conductor

Yes, as Wigs does, I completely concur with Docere's last post, though I know nothing of WNED's classical station (thanks for the tip). When we are looking for classical music, we turn to Radio Swiss Classic, an Internet station that runs exclusively music, except for very brief introductions (in German). As Docere averred, The "New" Classical FM, 96.3, has been pure rubbish since Moses Znaimer bought it 20-25 years ago.
TVO is, and has always been, an absolutely exceptional publicly funded channel, even better than PBS's WNED, which is itself outstanding.
CBC likes to describe itself as "Canada's Public Broadcaster", and it is not too bad, but its claim is deceptive given that it runs almost as many ads as the corporate channels.

Just to clarify, in case people don't know: CBC Radio doesn't run any ads on its channels at all. CBC TV runs ads on all of its channels.

CBC Radio actually has two channels broadcast across the country: Radio One which is the main news and public affairs channel. They also have documentaries and other cultural programming. It's basically a "talk" channel though you they might play some music here and there. Radio Two (now known as CBC Music) is their music channel. It's heavy on classical but also plays other genres on programs throughout its schedule. Very non-commercial in terms of musical choices.

BTW, has anyone noticed there a second HD channel affiliated with CBC Radio One? I am asking because Radio-Canada, its French equivalent, now has a second HD channel that basically plays classical music all the time, with only short introductions in French. (Similar to that Swiss channel someone else mentioned.)

So Radio-Canada actually has three channels now:

The main one, "talk" oriented like CBC Radio One.

A music channel, like CBC Music: some classical but also lots of other musical genres, but not generally mainstream.

And this new classical channel that I discovered accidentally last month. (It hasn't been publicized much at all.)

So does CBC English have one too?

Interestingly the classical station started out in Cobourg, a pleasant lakefront town about 120 km/75 miles east of Toronto.

Cobourg was also the original home of Victoria College, which moved to Toronto and affiliated with the University of Toronto in 1890.

Quebec has Télé-Québec and British Columbia has the Knowledge Network. Not sure how it is in BC but in Quebec they run ads on it. At the end of programs like in Europe. Other Quebec TV networks run ads the American way, in the middle of the programming.

Thanks for the pointer about Radio Swiss Classic. I've started listening, and I love it.

Thanks! I always like walking along the promenade there. That video from above of the scrapyard answers some questions as well.

Does WNED play jazz music at night? One of my memories from summers up in the Niagara Region is going to a Bisons game with the extended family (up to 20 of us sitting together), and then driving back on Highway 3 with a warm summer night with the windows of the minivan down and half the car falling asleep, and my dad having jazz on and hearing the crickets for a couple seconds at a time in the farm fields.

I believe it's Saturday nights they play jazz on sister station WBFO 88.7 FM (during the day it's NPR/news station), or at least did for years.

WNED Classical is 94.5 FM

Since ex-pat Buffalonian Tom Calderone (former VH1 head) now is President/CEO of WNED, the WBFO/88.7 station plays a lot of college rock, and 80s-90s-mid 2000s stuff on The Bridge program in the evenings.

Great pics, thanks for posting!

The Soo Locks reopened recently too, so the 2025 great lakes shipping season is now in full effect.

You're welcome, Steely

I love all of the POV timelapse footage YouTube now has of Lakers/Salties on the Welland Canal

This is heading North on the canal to Lake Ontario, going underneath Garden City Skyway in St. Catharines

^ yeah those sped up times lapse of the giant freighters locking through are always a trip to watch.

These massive ships squeezing into those locks like a tight glove, with mere inches to spare, and the sped up action all makes it seems like it's so simple and easy, like someone pulling their Honda into the garage.
