Yes, you are correct to point this out. He is not exactly the most engaging speaker in English either.

Being that way to begin with, and speaking in one's second language you haven't practised much, only exacerbates things.

The Anglo-Canadian average is literally nada, which IMO is a ridiculously low bar.

A more realistic bar is comparing his French proficiency to recent graduates of French Immersion programs in Ontario, given the importance of French for the role of Canadian PM?

Not sure anyone, including the Québécois, gives a rat's ass about the Prime Minister's French speaking abilities right now.

Maybe some guy from France does.

Plenty of Québécois do care, and I live with one who does.

For the Prime Minister of Canada, it definitely is.

I also beg to differ, but I guess we'll soon see how much of a deal-breaker that will be in an real electoral contest.

Folks are always free to vote for candidates of the party who's leader's official language abilities they prefer.

I think a Canadian PM should be bilingual, just to set a proper role model to every Canadian citizen.
It is a great thing to be bilingual, eh. it is a luck to make your brain more flexible and gives you a broader access to various cultures.
Who wouldn't be proud of their kids when they could speak both French and English fluently? Frankly, they'd be rather stupid not to be so.

Plus, it makes it easier to learn about more languages. Spanish for instance, that's not too hard when you're fluent in French.

Knowledge is always better than ignorance. Since American bashing has been in trend lately, I must say, often the Americans seem a little naive because they're dummies at foreign languages.
Although I personally met some of them whose French was better than my English, and I was astonished and felt ashamed, lol.

Global Happiness Index

If Québec were on its own it would be in 6th place worldwide.

Canada with Québec is 18th.

Canada-sans-Québec would slip to 29th place, five spots behind the US.

Same here.

Carney will win the “red mailbox” ridings in Quebec, but as we get to know him a bit more, I’d be surprised if he can pull off a Layton or JT level result.

One does never know, though. These are strange and unique times.

The wording of your last post was confusing. I misread it as saying your spouse/partner also cared about the French language abilities of our Prime Minister.

Nah, she doesn't give much of a fuck. And she's from Abitibi.
