Saint John isn't poor. Yes, it is primarily "Blue Collar", but I wouldn't say it is a poor city. Overall, the economy here has been pretty stable compared to other places. Is it a booming tech town like Kitchener/Waterloo with big 6-figure PLUS engineer jobs? NO. But it is also not over-dependent on lower-paying hourly freight and warehousing industries like other places here in NB, or across Canada. There are lots of well-paying unionized roles in Nuclear Energy, Shipping, Oil & Gas, Manufacturing, and more.
My argument is that Saint John has good, middle-class or higher employment opportunities in either long-standing and essential industries and home to a cluster of companies which are very loyal to the city. They just aren't "sexy jobs" compared to say ones in finance, tech, or real estate - all of which are pretty volatile industries.
I've always admired it for that longevity. You can't really find a city like it elsewhere in Canada.
