The new proposal is actually denser anyway, since it adds a few hundred more residential units. Looks good to me and fitting for the area

The NIMBYs hate the new proposal just as much as the previous one.
The original project was basically the same outcome as Peachtree Circle in Ansley Park, if not less obtrusive since the high rises here were on the NW corner of the site a few hundred feet from houses, and with a ground elevation 50' lower than the houses. The land was entitled to build this amount of density and up to 225', just in an all-commercial rather than mixed-use development. Nearby homeowners (and I am one!) should have understood this land's existing entitlement when purchasing their house; it's no secret Amsterdam Walk was underutilized prime real estate.
