Another idea I had thought of was to extend Acadian Dr. Reconnecting the old bridge next to riverview estates. This new road could run parallel to route 2, until near somewhere close to Jewels country market.

The city is actually planning on that, it’s going to unlock development in that pocket of the city. You can see the route as “proposed street” on the future land use map, last updated June 2024:

Yes I’ve seen this before but it the map ends at the city’s limits so didn’t know where they planned on having this road end at.

90 Lucy Cres - 32 unit

90 Lucy Cres Phase II: Construction of a 4-Story, 32Unit Apartment Building
Maple Isle Homes PEI Inc.

I searched Google Maps and Google Earth for Lucy Cres but I couldn't find it. I believe it may be in the East Royalty area. This project is in its second phase.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Prince County Hospital Foundation Announces $7 Million in Federal Funding to Support New Multi-Use Facility in Summerside

Summerside, Prince Edward Island – March 22, 2025

he Prince County Hospital Foundation is thrilled to announce a $7 Million investment from the Federal Government to support the development of a new multi-use facility to be constructed on a parcel of land recently acquired by the Foundation adjacent to Prince County Hospital (PCH).

MP for Egmont, Bobby Morrissey, was on hand at PCH to make the announcement on behalf of the Liberal Government contributing $7 Million, “This announcement supports what will be one of the most transformational community-led initiatives in the country to help improve system challenges. Our government is pleased to help bring this project to fruition for the benefit of so many Islanders.”

The new facility will address a range of healthcare and community needs with long-term benefits to help stabilize care in the region. It will support the PEI Family Medical Residency Program, offering both teaching and housing spaces for residents and medical learners as well as other healthcare workers. A key feature of the facility will be its simulation space, which will be available for use by the University of Prince Edward Island’s Faculty of Medicine, PCH staff, as well as a variety of external groups who require specialized training facilities. Additionally, the facility will feature an early years child care centre, addressing the pressing childcare needs of healthcare workers.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be $25 million, with the PCH Foundation actively exploring additional funding opportunities to meet this goal. Today’s announcement further solidifies the planning and construction of the facility after the Foundation received a $10 million commitment from the Provincial Government of PEI at the Grass Roots and Cowboy Boots hospital fundraiser this past fall.

“This is an exciting moment for the future of healthcare in our community,” said Derek Bondt, President of the PCH Foundation and Co-chair of the PCH Foundation’s Horizons Committee. “This special project offers so much opportunity to support the wonderful people who work at PCH. Longterm, it will make a material difference in stabilizing and strengthening the incredible care provided at the hospital. The support from both the federal and provincial governments brings us one step closer to realizing our vision for a facility that will have a lasting positive impact on healthcare in Prince County and across PEI. This project will not only help address critical staffing and training needs but also improve the quality of life for healthcare workers and their families. We are deeply grateful for the support we have received from both the federal and provincial governments and look forward to the positive impact this facility will have for years to come.”

The Prince County Hospital Foundation is committed to working with its partners and the community to complete this important project. Further announcements regarding additional funding and project milestones will be shared as the plans progress.

A Facebook post by MP Bobby Morrissey called this project the Prince County Innovation & Learning Centre.

Also in a quote from the Journal Pioneer
"The five-storey building will feature childcare on the first floor, a simulation centre on the second floor and room for residency on the third. Apartments will take up the final two, geared towards locums, travel nurses and medical residents...The goal is for the facility to open by fall 2027."

Not sure exactly where the project will be, as I've not seen any site plan, but exciting news for Summerside for sure!.

A permit approval for a No Frills small-format store in Charlottetown at the Spring Park Plaza, I assume in the space recently vacated by Great Canadian Dollar Store. Looked up this format, they range 8,000-15,000 sqft. Excellent news for that part of town, very accessible for people without a car.

The press release said it would be built on a piece of land adjacent to the Prince County Hospital.

Very interesting. It sounds like an integrated facility who's main role is to support the needs of medical learners and medical staff at the hospital.

This can be important. Back in the day (1982), I did a 4th year medical school rotation at the (old) Prince County Hospital, and the only real option I had for housing was to stay with my mother in Charlottetown and commute back and forth. It was only for two weeks, so it wasn't too much of a hardship though.

Placements in the community like this can be important. I came back to Summerside after finishing internship and spent a year in the town as a GP before going back to Halifax to complete a specialty residency. A facility like this will certainly help with medical recruitment.

Everything old is new again. I think back in the day there was a large nurse's residence attached to the old Saint John General.

Most hospitals had nurses residences. Almost every one that I have trained at or worked in. They can be a valuable resource, especially with an occasionally itinerant workforce frequently on call.

Getting rid of the residences was only one of several stupid things they did in the 1990s to cripple the health care system.

I've emailed Aaron Stavert at Open Practice about the 50 unit dwelling approved at 583 North River rd, asking if there were any publically available renderings at this moment, to which he said no and said they weren't able to share anything at the moment.

I see all has been approved, the demolition and footings. Having no renderings available is kind of strange. It's a small lot for 50 units and one just has to look at the new build on Capital Drive across from U-Haul, it's a 35 unit and it wouldn't fit on this lot. This build then would have to be at least six stories to fit here. It would be nice to see a rendering. Why the delay?

Yeah.. it's really strange. 50 units on such a small lot, so likely 6+ storeys, especially considering parking, yet "not able to share renderings"? Really strange, especially in Ch'town.

The foundation is complete, the steel is being erected and lumber has been delivered, so this project is well underway.

Off we go to the Public Confusion meeting!!! Why they have these is beyond me! Nobody listens to their stupid NIMBY suggestions and petitions. Waste of time! Imagine, having to live next door to new people!
One Year later, ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Crickets!!! Someone give that Gray Group a push. If housing is such a big thing here, then why did city council give approvals to companies that take so long for startups, eg. APM, Gray Group, etc. They should put a timeline on these approvals, and if they go over that time for startup, then they would have to pay a fee to start the process over again. I don't know but something has to be done to make this move faster. The city still has a 0.9 vacancy rate. Pretty bad!

Not sure I'd want to be in the ground building student housing at this time given the immigration restrictions on foreign students. Student rental market has dried up big time.

Yes, but students were just part of it. Parts of it were intended for family rentals. If students were its intended use, then you're probably right. Dang shame because it would look good across from the UPEI residence. It would give a nice perspective to University Ave, like a gateway opening looking down to the city centre. We'll see what happens I guess.

Royalty Crossing construction

There is hoarding up in the vacant units next to Ardene. Is there any information on what is going there?

Agreed - would be a great addition to the long-term rental stock!
