I've got a new job downtown, starting late next month, and I'll try to take pics of Olympic + Hill when I get the chance.

An article on a new restaurant one block west of the onni apt tower may not be about strictly new devlpt, but it sure does seem to come close. Or it deals with the condition of the area around a new highrise apt bldg at Olympic & Hill, which may or may not help it. In the case of a new restaurant at Olympic & Olive...in a bldg that has been vacant for about 2 yrs...it should help the Onni proj. The story is no less relevant than posts about the look of the skyline or that stray even further away from new devlpt & talk about transit or traffic.

this uncompleted highrise proj certainly is a big part of dtla....

Why haven't downtown LA's graffiti-covered towers been cleaned up?

• Video Link

In Feb. 2024, the L.A. City Council took action and gave the developer two weeks to start removing the graffiti or else the city would do it itself. But the city later backtracked, deciding that resident tax dollars shouldn't pay for the cleanup. One year later, nothing has been scrubbed off or painted over. Meanwhile, the developer behind the massive project is still the owner and remains in bankruptcy court after running out of cash and stopping construction.
^ I guess the city is one step closer to being forced to take over the site.

Any of the permit sleuths know when we might see construction begin on the LA Convention Center expansion? Last I heard it was supposed to be sometime this spring.

The convention center expansion isn't moving forward at this time. There was discussion about it in this thread, but all posts were scrubbed because mods thought it was too political.

Bummer that nothing got accelerated for the Olympics. I was expecting the Convention Center and Angels Landing to get fast tracked through the approval process, so they could meet their 2028 deadlines.

Stay away from Politics

Let’s not go down another rabbit hole of politics. Especially when most of the people on here don’t know half of the information of what’s all going on in the government.

Thanks for the responses. I know there are several Olympic events that are scheduled to be held at the Convention Center, so hopefully the current facilities are adequate for that. Luckily it's LA and there are plenty of other options to move to.

Not quite. There still a decent chance they will vote to move forward but pause for the Olympics.

Our convention center is so dated on the inside... let alone getting into the need for more space or an improved layout. Is the issue that LA doesn't believe we can be, or need to be, a premier destination for conventions? I mean... it is tough to compete with San Diego given it's waterfront convention center, adjacent Gaslamp Quarter, and close proximity to the airport.

Its actually a global phenomenon that all convention centers aren't doing well. Justification for any Convention Center Expansion is fairly difficult when most major conventions have either been downsized or outright cancelled.

Micro unit apartments debut at 1441 S. Flower Street in DTLA

LAHSA is master leasing the Liv DTLA apartments

March 5, 2025

Construction is complete for Liv DTLA, a new micro-unit apartment complex located a short walk south of Metro's Pico Station.

Located at 1411 S. Flower Street, the project from Arctaris Impact Investors, LLC and Housing Diversity Corporation is an eight-story structure containing 227 apartments, all of which will serve as supportive housing through a five-year master lease agreement with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. All apartments are to be reserved for low-income residents with vouchers earning up to 50 percent of area median income, with 10 percent reserved for extremely low-income renters earning up to 30 percent of the area median income level.

"Liv DTLA represents the heart of our mission at Housing Diversity Corporation: creating dignified, high-quality housing that's both affordable and connected to opportunity," said Housing Diversity Corp. founder and chief executive officer Brad Padden. "By placing well-designed homes near transit, employment, and essential services, we're not just addressing a housing crisis—we're building the foundation for a more equitable city."

The small parking lot to the site's south originally was going to be removed & replaced with a public plaza....but LA city engineers determined that the 2nd st tunnel under & to the north of the parking lot would be damaged if the land was cleared & changed to public usage......

Previously based in the Alex Theatre in Glendale, CA, for over 30 years, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) will be moving its Orchestral and Chamber programs to the Colburn School as of the 2025/26 season. The orchestra will reside at Colburn’s 430-seat Zipper Hall until fall 2027 when the new Terri and Jerry Kohl Hall will be built and opened.

Designed by Frank Gehry and part of the current expansion of the school’s campus, the new hall will involve 1,000 seats and an in-the-round design aimed at creating an intimate experience between the performers and the audience.

Finally those gaps are filling in! This will be big for Bunker Hill. Now we just need that lot to the north to be developed.

The Colburn Center new building will be nice.

And yet... the initial drawings showed the complex taking over Second Street between Olive and Hill (the ramp down to the where the street comes out of the tunnel). My completely amateur opinion is that very few people use that stub street, and it is the perfect example of something that could be made pedestrian to the city's great benefit.

Between that and the "engineers" disallowing the removal of the parking lot for a plaza discussed above (bizarre) the Colburn School's dedication to downtown went from an interesting re-use case of creating a catty-corner campus area to just having two buildings near each other downtown.

It's silly to have let unused asphalt reign supreme in a place where you want people to walk.

^ I don't know why the strength of the tunnel is so delicate that removing a small side street north of it & asphalt above the tunnel & south of it of the small parking lot was ruled as dangerous by the city's engineers. But I did read somewhere that thousands of ppl walking on a bridge may create more stress on it than moving cars or trucks....but the science is still hard to understand.

Original plans....

I can see it. Look how much concrete would be sitting on top of the tunnel in order to make the plaza level. If it's not reinforced or rebuilt in someway it may not be able to support all that weight. Remember it's the city engineers that deemed it unsafe, so it's not like the developers were trying to value engineer the project. I'm sure if it was feasible they would've allowed it since I agree it would've improve pedestrian access and activation.

This project fills a huge gap and will be even more important when the parcel next door, LA Times and the Broadway Metro station get redeveloped. More please!

Perhaps just turning that parking lot into a mini park with a cafe and benches for students might work? A bike rental space?
