Dear @Rick_m

Do you mean Pat Rocco? He shot this great man-on-the-street news story about the "Fagots Stay Out" sign protest at Barney's Beanery in 1970.

As a reminder.

Good eye!

Thanks HossC and Henryhuntington. I appreciate the help. : ) (and the date correction)

For newbies: Here is the Pacific Electric / Huntington Building in case you were wondering. (it still stands / as condos)

I've always liked this photograph of the subway emerging from the building.

Look out! Mr. photographer.

Great color photographs, Snix! They are amazing.

Has anyone yet mentioned the Original Pantry closing after 101 years?

After 101 years, the doors close on L.A.’s Original Pantry Cafe

Downtown Los Angeles on Sunday lost another iconic eatery with the closure of the Original Pantry Cafe, which had been serving up hot coffee, burgers and breakfast platters since 1924.
I didn't hear about this until the day before they closed for good. I spent many a very late night/early morning there...

I can't read the sign, but after a bit of snooping I found that the restaurant at 1610 N Vine Street was called Hatton's. With this in mind, I can just about make out that name on a sign below the word "STEAKS". On Flickr, jericl cat has a matchbook which claims that Hatton's was "Famous for Shish Kebab", and I believe that the words above "STEAKS" say "Shish Kebab".

Indeed--- Pat Rocco was quite a person---

A date took me into his home in 1973 -- looked like a casting session -- so I said we should scram---

Hoss! Of all the words I was trying to make out of the letters on that sign, Shish Kebab was probably the last thing I would've come up with, but you are absolutely correct! Now it's plain as day. Thank you!

Sorry to disappoint you but the image does not show the subway emerging from the building. The subway began underneath the building and headed north/northwestward before emerging from the underground tunnel. What you are looking at are the loading platforms for people taking the regular interurban red cars out to the suburbs. For in town transportation the yellow cars were the way to go (I sure miss those yellow and/or blue pcc from my youth!).

Nope, not disappointed in the least.

I have a mystery location, folks.

Los Angeles Ignition Works

YouTube

And as you can see we have street numbers. ... (there also appears to be a mystery hotel next door)

for search purposes:...
Alle S. Hamilton - Vesta -

The 1920 CD has the Los Angeles Ignition Works at 1007 S Main Street. Sadly, but not unsurprisingly, the building is long gone.

The building went through to Broadway as well.

These photos were taken by KNXT to document their billboard alerting viewers to that night's "Late Show" offering....

The s.w and n.w. corners of Wilshire and Western, 1959.

This was taken from under the awning of the Wiltern Theater.

Don't love this:

Then:

Now:

From Hollywood Heritage:

Once the epicenter of rock 'n rollers at every phase of life: the hopefuls, those on the rise and the hopeless, the Hollywood Center Motel property began life as a group of charming early Hollywood residences that rose between 1901 and the early '20s. Driving past it on Sunset Boulevard you see a mid-century motel that has seen much better days, but when you peer inside the gates, you glimpse the residential Hollywood that was familiar to Cecil B. DeMille and Charlie Chaplin.

In the 1950s, the property became The Hollywood Center Motel, complete with a kidney shaped pool, breeze block wall and neon sign. It was featured in a 1960 episode of "Perry Mason," "The Rockford Files" in the 1970s and in the 1997 neo-noir L.A. CONFIDENTIAL it was a pivotal location. Bands such as Buffalo Springfield practiced there and rockers came and went.

The property, located at 6720 Sunset Boulevard at Las Palmas, has been shuttered for quite some time, causing the buildings, the Queen Anne House and surrounding bungalows, to further decay. Now a notice of demolition has popped up. The inventory of early Hollywood homes is dwindling rapidly. Hollywood Heritage is investigating plans for the property. Stay tuned.

Top two photos taken from J.H.Graham's page on 6720 Sunset Blvd.: Hollywood Center Motel Lot's of historical info and photos: HERE.

Sad news, M P.

Thanks for figuring out the location of the Los Angeles Ignition Works, Hoss and odinthor. I appreciate your help.

We haven't seen Bourston's on NLA. (I searched)

eBay

The photograph inside of the folder is of three sailors.

Sometimes there are dates on the back of the folders but this one didn't/doesn't have a date.

I'll take a swing in the dark and say the 1940s.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have ourselves a mystery location.

This slide just popped up on eBay.

Seller's description:.."Vtg 1961 35mm Slide - TV Studio Logos Sign - Johnny Midnight - Los Angeles."

Does anyone know what tv studio this is?

eBay

There appears to be stand-alone letters at the top which seem a bit unusual.

Sally forth o' loyal plebes!
