I've heard there has been an increase in Owls all across the west. I haven't seen many, but I certainly hear them more.

Up to 15 now, feels super warm in the sun. If it weren't for the 60km/h wind gusts, there would be people on all the patios!

Currently +4C and sunny in Moncton at noontime.

We has a brief band of snow pass through southern NB last evening. No significant accumulation, but the roads were slippery for a few hours. My youngest son was driving home from Fredericton at the time and narrowly missed a multi-vehicle pile-up on the TCH near Petitcodiac - four tractor trailers and a couple of cars. Thankfully no serious injuries, but, he was stuck behind the pile-up for nearly four hours while they cleaned things up.

A very rapid fall in temperatures this morning in southern Manitoba.

Early this morning at YWG it was 3°, now gusty and -12°.

February has been mostly a cold month, with the final week being generally mild. The month will come in a few degrees below normal, but very dry with only about 3cm of snowfall. It was the coldest of the three winter months, which is not the norm, but can happen, much like August can be warmer than July. Very little snow cover is left.

The weekend looks cold tomorrow with a warm up on Sunday and then EC forecasts 8° on Monday, which is within striking distance of the record of 9.1° for the 3rd of March. The faster the snow goes the greater the chances for an early spring.

How do those palms survive in Vancouver after an arctic outflow?

I am genuinely curious.

Those are a hardier type of palm, also seen in Devon and Cornwall and can survive a good freeze.

I was in Vancouver earlier this month and it was very cold and there was snow cover that persisted for the entire week. I liked it though as there was plenty of sun, the mountains looked spectacular. The drivers were just awful. I'll take sunny and a few degrees on either side of the freezing mark over rain and 10° any day. I'm sure others might disagree.

Nice day. Supposed to get some snow later but it keeps getting downgraded (for here anyway) now saying 5 cm then transitioning to rain.

Exceptional diversity of trees at this park. Not surprisingly a ton of birds also. Merlin App picked these ones up. Northern Cardinal, Blue Jay, Chickadee, Raven, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Robin, Crow.

Does anyone know what kind of trees this is?

This is my 5th sighting this month of an owl. I've been out to look for Snowies but come up with others. Had a Barred owl in my Birch Tree a few weeks back. There are 8 Owls that are native in my area but like you I am starting to see them more. Never happen to see them when I have my big lens with me.

Have 2 bird feeders on my deck so have regular sightings for Sharp Knee Hawks and in the summer Kestrels. Have a couple of Bald Eagles that live in the area.

And Moose sightings should pick up in the coming months as we have new young born.

Mature windmill palms can handle a decent blast of cold. I think -14c is that magical number when you can start to see serious damage taking place. A prolonged spell of -14c or below temps will kill the tree's reproductive organs, and it's game over. They'll survive a short intense freeze.

Vancouver's low during that last arctic outflow was -9c, so most trees would be fine.

The real killer of these windmill palms is the summer. They need water, especially if they've been planted recently, and our summers are getting hotter and drier. Parks Vancouver planted a bunch of mature palms along Sunset Beach a few years ago, and all but a couple were killed off during the summer of 2021.

Also, most of the palms are in areas that are even milder / more protected than the airports. The coldest during the deep freeze in February was -9 at the airport, but only -5 on the downtown peninsula. Victoria bottomed out only between -6 at the airport to -2 near the water (so the term “deep freeze” seems to be used much more loosely than the rest of Canada).

These palms are also all throughout Japan which has a similar winter climate as the south B.C. coast.

And yes, 2021 was a bad year for the palms, especially juveniles. The heat dome killed quite a few (+40 temps are just as bad for windmill palms as -14, especially when combined with drought like conditions) and then after that intense stress they were hit with the coldest temperatures in decades that winter (hitting -15 in the colder areas and around -11 / -12 in the sheltered areas).

Nice day. Dry, mild and mostly sunny. There was a bit of a breeze, which kept it feeling fresh.

Friday's high at Vancouver Harbour was 13 C, the low was 8 C.

The snow is after taking a cutting. It's still green under the snow in my yard; I haven't gone back to check but in my mind it's usually closer to brown.
