Downtown upheaval expected as $150 million Kamloops RCMP project moves ahead

Be prepared for some significant disruptions through downtown Kamloops if the go-ahead is given to spend around $150 million to build a new RCMP headquarters in Kamloops.

A new set of designs was delivered to Kamloops Council as part of a Tuesday Committee of the Whole session.

Among the details provided about the proposed construction plans was a more fulsome assessment of the impact the construction is likely to have in the immediate and surrounding areas — particularly Battle and St. Paul Streets through the 600 and 500 blocks.

“There’s going to need to be, potentially, some lane closures as we go through,” cautioned Infrastructure Delivery Divisional Manager Matt Kachel. “We’ll have thru traffic, but there could be one lane taken out for deliveries…keeping an area for a large delivery semi [tractor-trailer] to come in with steel or various materials that are needed to construct the building.”

* Naturally the Mayor doesnt like the location of the planned police station. The same location where the current police station now sits.... For some reason. ( slow long exhale and head shake )

Court rules in city's favour, petition challenging Build Kamloops AAP dismissed

The woman who launched an unsuccessful challenge in B.C. Supreme Court over the city’s use of an alternative approval process last summer says she plans to appeal the judge’s decision to dismiss her petition.

Kathrine Wunderlich filed the petition in October, seeking to overturn two council-adopted bylaws authorizing the city to borrow up to $275 million for a performing arts centre, arena multiplex and future project design work.

On Friday, Justice Joel Groves said he didn’t see any basis for the borrowing bylaws to be quashed, as the city took reasonable steps to inform the public about the AAP.

“Obviously, we’re disappointed,” Wunderlich said of the judge’s decision.

Speaking with reporters after hearing Groves’ decision, Wunderlich said she planned to file an appeal right away.

I can't believe that person is appealing the decision. They must love throwing their money out the window. They don't have a leg to stand on. Glad the city finally played this card (alternative approval process) and got these buildings approved.

A lot of big ticket projects getting built downtown this year:
150 million - RCMP detachment
360 million - Cancer Centre
140 million - Performing Arts Centre
200 million - City Gardens
850 million total. With a few other random projects that I'm unsure of costs, like Canary lofts, 12 storey Columbia st apartment, Government precinct re-development, 2 River street condo buildings, there's probably at least a billion dollars getting spent just in the downtown core.

Is that RCMP building planned for this year? I know they still have to go through another AAP for it so not sure if it'd break ground this year.

Ya good call. I just checked and site work is scheduled to break ground next year. Detailed design is this year. That list would probably be better labelled 2025/2026 projects.

I like how the city is trying out 'back in angle parking' on Battle and St. Paul streets. You get so many more spots with this configuration. Nice to see them piloting this here.

Things look bright for Kamloops over the next few years... I can only imagine what a change in Federal Government would mean for a boom in Employment and costs for the average person. We may see a HUGE boom here in the city.

It feels like we’re having a BOOM currently as well with many buildings rising left right and centre more particularly on the NS, cannot wait to see what happens this Spring!!
Also, I do not remember if anyone has mentioned this in the past but have you guys seen this development online too? It shows Apartment buildings and is labeled as a ‘shovel ready’ project near Independent on Tranquille.

The link you provided is dead but If its the one I think you're talking about (large lot behind the north shore library) its quite old and I think its either for sale as a development site or was for sale. Definitely a large lot that should be built on asap.

Speaking of the North Shore. Another Tranquille projects looks to be starting up at 101 Oak Rd. They dropped off an excavator, and fenced off the property last week.

I'm assuming the ICS building is probably fairly close to breaking ground too. They took down that "Out for Tender" sign so I figure they've found someone.

Looks like everyone has now vacated the strip mall on the 200 block of Tranquille.
(pot shop, pizza shop, Genie convenience and that African kitchen that never materialized)

I know that the Dynasty Garden was slated for redevelopment but was there anything for this block? The Robo wash is also looking exceptionally run down.

I believe there is a Quesada fast food restaurant going into that strip mall, but that's just what I heard from someone familiar with city permitting and it was quite a bit ago.

Man that thing is bad. City website does say Quesada is going in there. will be the only business haha. It needs to go. Went by a couple days ago and they were filming a movie. I thought at first it was construction equipment and that thing was getting bulldozed, sadly not.

I have noticed the abandoned Pool Mart building beside Brighteye has lost the for sale sign on the front so maybe that eyesore has been bought. That thing needs to go as well.

Going to wager that clown MIKE ROSE took his pool joint off the market because he cant get the 200% over market value for it. The project JENSEN201 mentioned is behind the Library square but never materialized. I posted it a year or so ago on here too.
