It got sponsored by Ethiad! It is Ethiad Park now!

Can anyone add the name Ethiad Park to the title now? https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5937685/2024/11/21/etihad-park-nycfc-stadium-name/

Olympic soccer coming to Etihad Park in 2028
The new Willets Point, Queens stadium will host early-round Olympic matches as part of a cross-country approach to staging the soccer tournament of the 2028 Los Angeles games.

A small part of the 2028 Summer Olympics is coming to Queens.

The organizers of the upcoming Los Angeles, California-based Olympic and Paralympic games today announced that Etihad Park, set to open in Willets Point in 2027, will be a venue for some portion of the early rounds of the 2028 Olympic soccer tournament.

The Olympic soccer tournament will culminate in semi-finals and finals held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, with the men's gold medal match on July 28, and the women's tournament ending on July 29.

The new permanent home of New York City FC will be part of a cross-country progression that brings Olympic medal hopefuls from East Coast to West Coast as they advance in the tournament.
Quote:
The release announcing the soccer venues for the Olympics stressed that teams will move "progressively from east to west" as they win and make progress toward the finals, a design meant to lessen the amount of travel athletes deal with during the games.

All the newly-announced soccer stadiums hosting the 2028 Olympic soccer tournament are home to Major League Soccer franchises. The list of non-Rose Bowl venues is as follows:

-Etihad Park, Queens, NY
-ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, Columbus, OH
-GEODIS Park, Nashville, TN
-Energizer Park, St. Louis, MO
-PayPal Park, San Jose, CA
-Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego, CA

New York City FC will move to Etihad Park at start of 2027/28 season
NYCFC will continue to play home matches at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field during the 14-game sprint season held in early 2027 before debuting at Etihad Park sometime in July.

New York City FC announced today that they will make their Etihad Park debut during the 2027/28 Major League Soccer season. That's when MLS will shift to a summer-to-spring schedule, opening the season in July of 2027 and playing to conclusion in May of 2028.

That means the club will play home matches during the mini 2027 "transition" season at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, giving New York City fans one last taste of professional soccer played on baseball fields. The schedule for the 14-game 2027 transition season won't be announced until after the end of the 2026 season.

The club clarified that construction at Etihad Park remains "on schedule," and isn't the reason for the decision. Instead, according to CEO Brad Sims, the 2027/28 season is "the right moment to open Etihad Park" because it "ensures our fans can experience Etihad Park from day one, rather than in the middle of a transition year. This approach allows us to properly celebrate our final matches at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, prepare thoughtfully for the move, and build toward a definitive and historic opening that reflects what this moment means for us and our city."

Gotham FC in talks to move to NYCFC’s new Queens stadium

Gotham FC might be on the move.

The 2025 NWSL champions are exploring the possibility of relocating to New York City FC’s new soccer stadium in Queens as soon as 2028. Sportico reported Wednesday that the clubs are in advanced talks about a deal.

Several sources told The Post that nothing has been finalized.

Gotham has called Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, N.J., home since 2021. They share the venue with the Red Bulls of MLS.

NYCFC currently plays some of their matches at each of New York’s MLB stadiums. The new stadium, Etihad Park, which NYCFC owners are funding with $780 million, will be located next to Citi Field and is expected to open before the 2027-28 MLS season.

But Gotham is considering becoming a fellow tenant of Etihad Park.
Quote:
“Like many clubs, especially in the NWSL as the league rapidly grows, we regularly evaluate options to best support our players, supporters and organization,” Gotham said in a statement. “We don’t have any updates to share right now.”

The Post asked NYCFC COO Jennifer O’Sullivan in March about the possibility of a women’s team coming to the new stadium.

“We’ve always had it in our DNA about bringing a women’s team… We’ve always wanted to do that,” she said. “The stadium has had to be the first domino to fall for us. We’d always said we’d bring one in when we had the right infrastructure and the right facilities to be able to support. We’ve kind of been parallel pathing and trying to figure out all the different opportunities and options that are available to us when it comes to a women’s team. We’re still looking at all of those, but I can guarantee you that someday there will be a women’s team playing in this building, because it’s something we believe in and we really want to have. And so that’s a guarantee. When it will happen, I don’t know, but it will definitely happen for us.”

Gotham is set to get a preview of what it might be like to play in “The World’s Borough” this summer when they host Trinity Rodman and the Washington Spirit on July 15 for “The Queens Classic” at Citi Field. Gotham has already distributed more than 16,000 tickets for the highly anticipated match.

Late last month, Mayor Zohran Mamdani partnered with Gotham to sell 1,000 tickets to the club’s recent match against Boston Legacy FC for $5 each. The promotion was wildly successful and resulted in a lower-bowl sellout of 11,308 — the fourth-largest regular-season attendance in franchise history.
