I'm a bit skeptical of that because the angle of incidence was pretty small. And even if it managed to get over the barrier, that would have already dissipated a lot of the car's speed and energy, which would likely have made the accident more survivable.

@GMasterAres has it right in that there's a spectrum of possibilities and mitigating measures, and the important thing isn't whether the new bridge would have prevented this type of accident or not - it's whether the new bridge and would reduce the number and severity of these types of accidents.

If someone wants to claim that this isn't true, then there's an interesting discussion to be had. But arguing about one specific accident is a bit of a fool's errand (he says, having just made an argument about it... )

Yeah, all I meant with "could" have flipped was that it wasn't a "standard" head-on crash where a car veers a bit over a centre line.
It was a weird drifting side-swipe with a lot of sideways momentum. I wasn't being analytical.

Actually, Pier S1 and S2 are not connected yet. The girders are uneven on each side, so some cable tensioning adjustments will likely be needed before they can fully connect.

Thanks for the pics!

It's great seeing the off ramp come together.

Aerial from the project twitter website posted March 27th:

Bridge deck construction continues! 40 of the #PattulloBridgeReplacement’s 80 stay cables are now installed.
Stay cables transfer the bridge deck’s load to the tower while ensuring balance and stability.

Today - 4 year anniversary. Will there be a 5th anniversary, I hope not, I'm looking forward to driving on this bridge.

Nice, thanks for the updates!

We should see the bridge deck extend west at a faster pace now.

Thanks!
I hadn't realized that there will be an equal number of cables on the north and south sides, despite there being bents closer in on the south side.
You can see the attachment points for more cables on your pic of the tower, and on the rendering below.
I guess that's to balance the bridge.

After a long pause they resumed stay cable installation. It is 11th pair on the south side.

Thanks!
The cables look thin under the sheathing.

Here are some pics from the twitter feed:

This cool shot from above shows the cable stays installed on the #PattulloBridgeReplacement!
The cable-supported section of the bridge, which spans most of the Fraser River, is about 570 metres long. In this photo, you can see equipment and materials prepared for upcoming work.

Here’s a look at progress for the multi-use path (MUP) structure in
@New_Westminster
This MUP will connect people in New Westminster to the #PattulloBridgeReplacement! The MUP is designed to be wide enough so people who are walking, rolling or cycling can share the same path.

This week, crews completed the connection of the #PattulloBridgeReplacement's main span & south approach.
This marks the creation of a continuous bridge deck from the bridge tower into Surrey. Crews aligned girders within just a few millimeters for the connection!

Here’s a close-up view of the bridge’s south approach in
@CityofSurrey
To build the on-land bridge deck, large steel beams called girders are installed to connect the bridge foundations. Once the girders are in place, precast concrete deck panels are installed on top.
